The Spiro Bulldogs and the Heavener Wolves were local winners on the opening-round of the Poteau Freshmen Tournament Monday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
On the boys' side, Spiro defeated host Poteau 49-34, while Heavener knocked off Muldrow 45-28.
However, both local girls' teams in action suffered opening-round losses. Muldrow beat Heavener beat 33-27, while Wilburton edged Wister 31-26.
Tuesday's final day of opening-round action saw Roland meet Sallisaw, while Stigler played Fort Gibson in boys' games. In girls' contests, Howe faced Roland and host Poteau played Fort Gibson.
CAMERON — Thanks to a late fourth-quarter run, the Bokoshe Lady Tigers were able to withstand the upset bid by the Cameron Lady Yellowjacket to post a 42-40 victory Monday night at the Cameron Gym to spoil Cameron's homecoming.
However, the homestanding ’Jackets celebrated homecoming with a 64-24 win over the Tigers.
BATTIEST — The Whitesboro High School basketball teams split their first games back from Thanksgiving Break Monday night with Battiest.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Panthers 25-17, but the ’Dogs lost 58-40 to the Panthers.
The Poteau High School basketball teams began their seasons on Tuesday. Now, it's the wrestlers' turn.
The Pirates will begin their 2011-12 season at 7 p.m. Thursday in Glenpool before going to the two-day Jay Border Wars, which will begin at 2 p.m. Friday.
The Oklahoma State University 2011 Christmas Baseball Camps will be next month at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater.
The 2011 Cowboy Youth Christmas Camp Sessions for those who are in grades two through eight will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 for the first session, and the same time for the second session on Dec. 11. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. both days. The camp cost is $200.
The 2011 Cowboy High School Christmas Hitting Camp will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 17, while the Christmas Pitching Camp will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 18.
TULSA — On Friday morning, it looked like the only two Conference USA football teams who were undefeated — Houston and Tulsa — would mean a good game. For three quarters, it was.
But the Cougars showed the Golden Hurricane that they're for real and deserving of their Top 10 ranking with a 48-16 victory at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
I really don’t understand why high school girls play fast-pitch softball in the fall and slow-pitch softball in the spring.
I believe it would be to everyone’s advantage if they would play fast-pitch softball all year round. Our county is loaded with teams that are very highly regarded, and we had a state champion last fall — the Panama Lady Razorbacks.
Plus, the spring is the time of the year when all the surrounding states play fast-pitch softball — as well as at the collegiate level — and their spring schedule could be a stair step to bigger and better things.
