July 8th
Laura Karen Sumpter is one of the fastest long-distance runners in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.
At age 61, she competes in 5K runs (3.1 miles) all over eastern Oklahoma and nationwide with a recent competitive 5K run in the Senior Olympics.
Sumpter won the Silver Medal in the National Senior Olympic 5K run with a time of 25:38 this past month in Houston.
WISTER — It was a pair of almosts for the Poteau American Legion AAA baseball team Wednesday night against Rogers, Ark.
In the opener, Rogers scored once in the eighth inning to get past Poteau 4-3. Then in the nightcap, after Wister's Colby Turnipseed hit a two-out, grand-slam home run which put Poteau ahead in the fourth inning, Rogers scored three runs in the fifth inning as the visitors left an 11-9 victor in the five-inning contest.

The LeFlore County Bass Club will have an open bass tournament from 5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake.
The entry fee is $40 per angler, with no dead fish.

July 7th
The seven OK Kids Midget Regional Tournaments have been set for this weekend.
One lucky team from each regional will join Poteau's team at the 2011 State Tournament, which will begin Tuesday and end July 16 at the Poteau Area Recreational Area (PARC).
One regional tournament, Region No. 7, is right here in LeFlore County, specifically in Panama. Along with the tournament-host team, the Panama Red, will be the Spiro Cardinals, Red Oak, the Vian Yard Dawgz, the Preston Gorillaz, Tushka, the Stigler Renegades and the Morris Wild Thang.

NORMAN — Team Oklahoma, which featured Heavener Wolf Koda Glover, finished fourth at the 2011 Heartland Classic, which took place at the end of June.
Oklahoma lost 12-2 to Arizona in the third-place game on June 25.
Oklahoma, which went 5-2 overall and opened the event by beating Maryland (12-4) and Ohio (13-4) on June 21, split its games on June 22 — beating Arizona 13-5 but losing 4-2 to Georgia.
On June 23, Oklahoma had another 2-0 day, defeating Arkansas 6-4 and Canada 12-10, but lost 12-2 to Texas on June 24.
