Baseball player with Poteau ties makes Texas All-State Team

Colt Midgley, who played baseball for North Hopkins High School in Sulphur Springs, Texas, made the 2011 Texas Sports Writers Association Class A All-State Baseball Team.
Midgley, who graduated this past spring, batted .576 with 22 runs scored, seven stolen bases and a .659 on-base percentage.
Midgley is the son of Johnnie and Melissa Midgley of Sulphur Springs, and the grandson of J.C. and Glenda Midgley of Poteau and the great-grandson of Johnnie Dovey and the late Buster Dovey Jr., also of Poteau.

Local athletes honored by merged gymnastics schools

For the first time since Poteau Spirit Center and Shooting Stars Gymnastics Center merged in May, they have announced their first Stars of the Month.
Candelyn Kitchens won the Cheerleading Award for the month for “being a good leader.”
The Tumbling Award went to Courtney Kitchens for “working so hard.”
Katie Magness was awarded the Team Award for “her commitment to her gymnastics, and for making great progress over this summer.”
This month's Gymnastics Award went to Raegan Kardokus for “showing a lot of improvement and continuing to try hard.”

George Trenholm Abrahams, 97, of Spiro died Friday,
July 15, 2011. Services were held Monday, July 18, at the
First United Methodist Church in Spiro under the direction
of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.

Omer Edmond Yandell

July 19, 2011

Omer Edmond Yandell, 84, of Wister died Saturday,
July 16, 2011, in Wister. Omer was born Aug. 9, 1926, to
George Franklin and Lucy (Jones) Yandell. Omer was a
veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in WWII. He
worked for public works, at a sawmill and as a farmer. He
was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hazel; son,
Billy; and grandsons, James Ray and Joshua Duane.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen
and David Adams of Duncan, Merdith Atwell of Lawton,
Mary and Steve Arbuckle of Duncan, Billie Yandell of

Thurman Lee Harber Sr.

July 19, 2011

Thurman Lee Harber Sr., 84, of Monroe
died Sunday, July 17, 2011, in Monroe.
Thurman was born April 15, 1927, in
Monroe to William Quirlous and Beulah
Leona (Weatherford) Harber. He was a
mechanic. He was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers L.Z. Harber and Delbert
Harber, an infant brother and sister.
Survivors include his wife, Jerolene of
the home; three sons, Thurman Harber Jr. and Rose, of
Monroe, Dennis Harber and Donny Harber of Pocola;
seven grandchildren, Lee Harber, Matt Cordes, Tiffany
Harber, David Harber, Brian Harber, Blandon Deen, and

Derrell D. Plummer

July 19, 2011

Services for Derrell D. Plummer will be
held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2011,
at Evans Chapel of Memories in Poteau
with The Rev. Jim Cook officiating. Burial
will be at Oakland Cemetery under the
direction of Evans and Miller Funeral
Home. The family will receive visitors from
6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Derrell died Sunday, July 17, at St.
Francis Hospital in Tulsa, seven days following the death
of his wife, Ophelia.
The son of Edd and Elsie (Young) Plummer, Derrell
was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Oliver, Ark. The family

EOMC gets $2 Million

Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center is the first rural hospital in the State of Oklahoma to receive incentive payments under both the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs; part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Their efforts have been rewarded with $2 million in incentive payments within the past 5 months. This program is in conjunction with a nationwide initiative from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to demonstrate “meaningful use” of an Electronic Health Record.
