Durant Rangers hang on to beat Tushka, make title game

In Friday night's loser's-bracket final in the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex, after the Durant Rangers had a seven-run outburst in the opening inning, it looked as if it was going to be a run-rule contest.
That ended up being farthest from the truth.
The Tushka Tigers kept chipping away at the deficit, but in the end they fell a run short in a 7-6 win by the Rangers to send them to tonight's state title game.
The Tigers end the season at 36-20.

Tushka Tigers break open tight game late to eliminate Weatherford Red

For 4.5 innings, the loser’s-bracket semifinal between the Tushka Tigers and the Weatherford Red was up for grabs.
But a three-run fifth inning by the Tigers broke open a close game as Tushka eliminated Weatherford by a score of 6-2 Friday night in the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Tushka (36-19) broke the scoreless tie on an RBI single by Dillon Mansell and a Weatherford error for a 2-0 lead after an inning.
An RBI single by Ridge Stephens in the second inning score Cole Broughton to make it 3-0 after two innings.

Holdenville a win away from state championship; Outlaws double up Durant Rangers in winner's-bracket final Thursday night

The Holdenville Outlaws will try to crown themselves state champions tonight.
The Outlaws doubled up the Durant Rangers 6-3 Thursday night in the winner's-bracket final of the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The Outlaws (49-6) will play for the state title at 6 p.m. tonight.

Poteau Legion still uncertain if home game against Okmulgee will take place

As of press time for today's edition, it was still uncertain if the Poteau American Legion AAA baseball team was going to have its regular-season finale doubleheader against Okmulgee in Wister.
The twinbill was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, but did not take place.
Poteau Coach Shain Turnipseed said Friday afternoon that he was waiting to hear from Okmulgee's coach. The plan was to play the doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Wister, but no time had been set.

Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball coach takes OU position

WILBURTON — After seven seasons at the helm of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Mountaineer baseball team, Coach Aric Thomas will return to Norman when he joins the coaching staff at the University of Oklahoma. The university announced July 9 that Thomas, who spent 11 seasons as a Sooner player and coach, will take over as the OU hitting coach.

WILBURTON — The 2012 recruiting class at Eastern Oklahoma State College made headlines last month when the Wilburton college baseball team signed the No. 1 high school player in the country, Owasso's Dylan Bundy. Bundy joins a Mountaineer signing class that includes three other Major League Baseball Draft choices.

Tushka Tigers pitching duo deliver shutout of Kingfisher ’Jackets to stave off elimination

For fans of pitchers, the first elimination game of Thursday afternoon's slate of action in the 2011 OK Kids Midget State Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex was to their liking.
The contest between the Tushka Tigers and the Kingfisher ’Jackets was indeed a pitcher's duel — although there were three pitchers involved.
Tushka's duo of Connor Sutton and Tyler Frank outdueled Kingfisher's starter Matt Hopkins and pitched the Tigers into tonight's loser's-bracket semifinal with a 2-0 victory.
