With no team to play for either the Poteau Lady Pirates (since the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets had to cancel because of lack of players) or the Heavener Lady Wolves (since they were not put into the bracket at the two-day Westville Tournament for Monday and Tuesday), the two LeFlore County locals met to do battle Tuesday afternoon.
In a game Poteau Coach Misty Collins called “ugly,” the Lady Pirates run ruled the Lady Wolves 13-5 in six innings.
The Heavener Wolves are poised to try to make sure that what happened to begin the 2010 football season does not happen when they open the 2011 season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Savanna.
Last year, the Bulldogs took advantage of a special teams miscue inside the Heavener 5 with about 60 seconds left to play and scored to seal a 14-6 victory at Harvey Stadium.
“It was a very disappointing and heartbreaking loss,” Heavener Coach John Thompson said.
CALVIN — The weekend ended on a high note for the Leflore Savages Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Wanette Tigers 12-1 to win the consolation championship in the Calvin Tournament.
Leflore 8, Kiowa 2; Panola 8, Leflore 1: In Leflore, the Savages (6-5) split their home games in Monday's three-way.
Wister 13, McCurtain 0; Wister 12, McCurtain 1: In Wister, the Wildcats (10-2) bounced back from Saturday afternoon's title-game loss to Wister in the 16th Carl Albert Fall Baseball Classic in a big way Monday afternoon.
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Panama Lady Razorbacks split their two games last weekend at the Hall of Fame Shootout at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Lady ’Backs opened with a 2-1 win over the Tuttle Lady Tigers on Friday before losing 7-1 to the Henryetta Lady Knights on Saturday.

David Glen Johnson, 66, of Wister died Sunday, Aug.
28, 2011, in Wister.
Services will be at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at
Bethel Baptist Church in Wister with The Rev. Clyde
Steelman officiating. Burial will be in Ellis Chapel
Cemetery, Wister, under the direction of Evans and Miller
Funeral Home, Poteau.
Evangeline Meashintubby, 60, of Atoka died Friday
Aug. 26, 2011 in Talihina. Services will be held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Rock Creek Cemetery, Honobia.
Interment will follow under the direction of Talihina
Funeral Home.
Ray Vermillion, 73, of Wister died Sunday, Aug. 28,
2011, in Poteau. Ray was born in Whiteface, Texas, on
Dec. 20, 1937, to Holley L. and Vinita (Stroud) Vermillion.
He was a realtor. Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife Cecelia of the home; daughter,
Jean Morris of Ratliff City; son and daughter-in-law,
Dennis and Lisa Vermillion of Wister; three grandchildren,
Shelby Hill, Monty Hill and Sara Vermillion; brother,
Marvin Vermillion of Austin, Texas; numerous nieces,
nephews, other relatives, loved ones and friends.
Eugene Travis Boyer of Muskogee (formerly
of Poteau) died Saturday, Aug. 27,
2011, in Muskogee.
Gene was born Oct. 14 in Parma, Mo.,
to Otto Chester and Stella Pearl (Carylile)
Boyer. He spent his career as a retail manager
for Walmart and C.R. Anthony’s and
was a partner in D&D Pharmacy in Poteau
and Fort Smith, Ark. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Betty. Gene was a 57-year member of the Poteau
Masonic Lodge. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army and
attended First Baptist Church in Poteau. His passion was
bowling.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and
Jack Claude “J.C.” Kuykendall, 78, of
Wister died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, in
Poteau. J.C. was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Red
Oak to Jesse Herman and Effie (Pulley)
Kuykendall. He was a car salesman. J.C.
was preceded in death by his parents; his
first wife of 44 years, Ruby Marie Harmon;
sons, Carroll and Ronnie Kuykendall; and
brother, Larry Kuykendall.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of the home; sons,
Jerry Kuykendall, Terry Kuykendall and Claude Kuykendall
of California, Gary Henson of Missouri; daughters, Shirley
Thomas of Lodi, Calif., Marie Ford of Norman, Vernoyise
Ruby Mae Webb, 93, of Poteau died
Aug. 28, 2011, in Poteau. She was born
June 23, 1918, in Poteau to Harmon and
Callie (Coggins) Davis. She was a homemaker
and a member of the Calvary
Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
her first husband and father of her
children, W. Leo Webb, and second husband, John Baldwin;
and a son, Bob Webb.
Ruby is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law,
Winford Webb and wife Sharon of Poteau, Roger Webb
and wife Kaye of Broken Arrow; daughter-in-law Jo Ann
Webb of Gans; a brother, Floyd Davis and wife Beverly of
