James “Buck” Sandlin, 86, of Spiro died Sunday, Sept.
4, 2011. Graveside services were held Monday, Sept. 12,
at Spiro City Cemetery under the direction of MMallory-
Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.

Walter Gustafson

September 13, 2011

Walter Gustafson, 76, of Panama died Friday, Sept. 9,
in Poteau. Walter was born Aug. 1, 1935, in Attlebord,
Mass. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at
Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in New
Hope Cemetery, Spiro. Arrangements are under the direction
of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Retha Mitchell Barnes

September 13, 2011

Retha Mitchell Barnes, 83, of Hartford,
Ark., died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, in a
Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker
and member of the Hartford First Baptist
Church.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday,
Sept. 12, at First Baptist Church of Hartford
with burial at Monroe Cemetery under the
direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood,
Ark.
Viewing will be Sunday from 1-9 p.m. at the funeral
home, where the family will visit with friends from 2-5
p.m.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, A.C.
Barnes; three daughters, Sharon White and husband

Poteau girls split final two games at OU Tournament; pitcher no-hits Choctaw Lady Yellowjackets

NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team split its final two games in the University of Oklahoma Tournament Saturday at the OU Softball Complex.
Poteau began the day with a 4-2 win over the Choctaw Lady Yellowjackets, but lost a hard-fought 1-0 contest to the Washington Lady Warriors.

Wister boys repeat as champs of Wood Bat Tournament

HOWE — For the second straight fall, the championship plaque of the Howe Wood Bat Tournament is going to Wister High School.
The Wildcats doubled up the Cameron Yellowjackets 4-2 Saturday night at Lions Field to win their second straight Wood Bat Tournament title.
The ’Cats began the day with a 12-1 four-inning, run-rule win over the Whitesboro Bulldogs in one championship semifinal, while the ’Jackets got a no-hitter from Alex Humphries to defeat the Clayton Bulldogs 8-0 in a five-inning, run-rule victory in the other semfinal.

'One-Man Show' does need help to get things covered

Saturday afternoon, our business manager, Paula Midgley (whose husband, George, writes the weekly Lookin' Down the Barrel outdoor column every Thursday) send me a text message. The message said that this individual was disappointed in the fact that nothing was reported on last week's LeFlore County Junior High Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
I responded by simply saying, “No one ever called in scores to me.”

Heavener girls capture Henryetta Invitational; Wolves finish in third; Poteau Pirate Invitational slated Saturday morning

HENRYETTA — The Heavener Lady Wolves cross country team won Saturday morning's Henryetta Invitational.
The Lady Wolves scored 79 points, with Quinton and Glenpool tying for second (97 points).
Two Lady Wolves finished in the top 10 — Araceli Farias was seventh (14:26) and Johna Enger was eighth (14:46). Kaylen Leder was 17th (15:23), Jazmin Cruz was 19th (15:38) and Caitlin Carson was 28th (16:50).
The Wolves were third in their meet with 89 points. Host Henryetta won its own meet with 36 points, with Glenpool runner-up (76 points).
