As the teams entered their locker room at halftime, the Poteau Pirates appeared to be sitting in the catbird's seat, but after a verbal lashing by their coach at half time, the Checotah Wildcats came out in the second half and dominated the third quarter to actually gain the lead.
Poteau had to stage two fourth-quarter scoring drives to seal the 38-35 victory in the season opener Friday night at Costner Stadium.
ARKOMA — Led by the passing of Christian Davis and the receiving of Tyler Sweeten, the Arkoma Mustangs defeated Keota 34-20 in a game in which they never trailed.
The win avenged last year's 62-14 loss to the Lions in Keota to begin the 2010 season.
POCOLA — The Pocola Indians ended the season last year with a three-game winning streak. The winning streak reached four as the new season got under way Friday night at John Carter Field.
The Indians handled the Tulsa Regent Prep Rams by a score 43-14.
HAILEYVILLE — With a bunch of new faces, the Talihina Golden Tigers were hoping to continue their winning ways from a season ago. They did just that Friday night.
The Golden Tigers ended up routing the Haileyville Warriors 31-7 Friday night in the 2011 season opener.
BOKOSHE — The Porum Panthers spoiled the coaching debut of new Bokoshe Tigers Football Coach Tyler Massey Friday night as the visitors left with a 56-0 win.
SAVANNA — The Savanna Bulldogs spoiled the season opener for the Heavener Wolves Friday night as they won 34-6.
SPIRO — Last year when the Spiro Bulldogs and the Panama Razorbacks opened the 2010 season at Panama's George Ollie Stadium, the game was fairly close — with Spiro winning 27-14.
However, Thursday night when the two opened the season at McClain Stadium, it was totally different as the ’Dogs handled the Hogs for a 44-6 victory.
Poteau’s freshmen class of 2011 have matriculated through Bandit Football and Pansy Kidd Middle School and, to be truthful, they have had their share of set backs. In Thursday night's game against the Broken Bow Savages at Costner Stadium, you could see the skill level of both teams were on the same plane.
But if the youngest Pirates need to learn anything more, it would be to learn how to finish off a victory.
LEFLORE — After seeing the winless Eagletown Eagles rally in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead, things were not looking too promising for the hometown Leflore Savages in Friday's contest.
But they returned the favor to the Eagles as the Savages also had a two-run seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 victory.
POCOLA — The Pocola Lady Indians ended the week with a home victory over the Keota Lady Lions by a score of 6-3 Thursday afternoon.
Wister 9, McCurtain 3; Wister 17, McCurtain 5: Thursday in McCurtain, the Lady Wildcats (10-8) ran their winning streak to four games by sweeping their Green Country Conference foes.
Pocola 7, Sallisaw-Central 4: Tuesday in Panama, after losing to the host Lady Razorbacks, the Lady Indians bounced back with a comeback win.
