Arkansas beats Troy to go to 3-0, but lots of work to do to get ready for No. 2 ’Bama

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Anyone who saw Saturday night's Troy-Arkansas game at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium may have felt like it was two separate games.
In the first half, the Razorbacks (3-0) looked like world beaters. They scored on their first four possessions of the first half en route to a 24-0 lead by the 6:41 mark of the second period.

Oran Lee Ross

Oran Lee Ross, 80, of Cameron died Wednesday,
Sept. 14, 2011, in Cameron. Oran was born Sept. 5,
1931, in Hackett, Ark., to Glenn and Grace Ray Ross.
Oran was an engineer at Whirlpool where he retired
after 37 years. He was on the Cameron City Council for
50 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and
served during the Korean War. He was preceded in
death by his parents; wife of 56 years, Earlene Ross and
brother, Gene Ross.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Lea and
Jim Ridenour of Cameron; son, Byron Ross of Cameron;

Paul “Butch” Dora

Paul “Butch” Dora, 41, of Poteau died Wednesday,
Sept. 14, 2011.
Paul was born Aug. 12, 1970, in Corona, Calif., to Paul
Lee II and Jacqueline Wales Dora. He was preceded in
death by his grandfather, Paul Dora I; grandmother, Patricia
Wales; and step-grandfather, Raymond Bean. Survivors
include his wife, Tonya of the home; daughters, Brooke
Elizalde of Redlands, Calif., Haley Pendergrass of Poteau,
Jessica Dora of Poteau; sons, Benjamin Hammon of San
Diego, Calif., Trevor Dora of Murrieta, Calif., Jordan
Pendergrass of Poteau, William Riley Dora of Poteau,

Morning accident

September 20, 2011

A two vehicle accident in Panama Friday morning left traffic backed up temporarily
as many were trying to get to school and work. According to the accident report,
Sarah Painter, 23, of Panama was stopped at the US Highway 59 and Tecumseh
intersection waiting to turn left onto the highway. Two vehicles were traveling
northbound when the one on the inside lane signaled to turn right onto Tecumseh.
Painter, not seeing the second vehicle driven by Brian Fassette, 65, of Heavener in
the inside lane, began to cross the highway resulting in Fassette colliding with her

A local woman who took telling bedtime
stories to her children one step further
will be signing her recently published
book at a Poteau business on
Saturday, September 24.
Sandy Ellis, who works as a graphic
designer at GCT Printing Solutions and
has more than twenty years experience in
writing and composing with the Poteau
Daily News, will be signing her book
“The Change in Priscilla” at Price Cutter
in Poteau.
Ellis, who spent many years telling her
children stories, realized that she had a
passion to put them on paper for the

The Poteau Lady Pirates were the only team to go through the 2011 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament undefeated as they claimed their fourth straight title.
The Lady Pirates defeated the Panama Lady Razorbacks 4-1 amid rain sprinkles Thursday night at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.

Miscues spell defeat for Pirates as Gravette wins; 'Red Out' happening next week in District 4A-4 opener against Hilldale

Count ’em — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. That is how many turnovers the Poteau Pirates had in Friday night's contest at Costner Stadium against the Gravette Lions, who are ranked eighth in Class 4A in Arkansas. A team could not beat an average or sub-par team with those numbers, much less a team of the Lions' caliber. In the end, the Lions left town 31-16 victors.

Strong second half leads Talihina to win at home

TALIHINA — After being away from Doc Robinson Stadium for about a month since their first preseason scrimmage in the third week of August, the Talihina Golden Tigers presented their fans with a home-opening win Friday night.
After the game was tied at 7-7, the Golden Tigers outscored Sallisaw-Central 33-0 in the second half to roll past the Tigers 40-7.
