Howe teams win openers at Wilburton Tournament; Lady Lions too much for Poteau freshmen, while Lions tame Red Oak Eagles

WILBURTON — The Howe High School basketball teams each posted wins to begin the first-ever Wilburton Tournament on Thursday at the new Wilburton High School Gym.
The Lady Lions handled the Poteau Lady Pirates freshmen 70-16, while the Lions led from start to finish to down the Red Oak Eagles 53-41 to snap Red Oak's six-game winning streak.

Arkoma boys get first win of season, defeat Bokoshe on Tuesday night

BOKOSHE — The Arkoma Mustangs got their first victory of the 2011-12 season as they defeated the Bokoshe Tigers 76-33 Tuesday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.

Contrary to many swine epidermis prognosticators, I have a strange way of predicting scores. I have a unique way of reading the corns and bunions on my feet, and here's what my feet say with this year's bowl games — and I did not make up some of this year's bowl game names, really!
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl — This was formerly the Humanitarian Bowl on the blue turf at Boise State University. It's Utah State vs. Ohio. I think the Mid-American Conference will prevail as the Bobcats beat the Aggies.

I got run over by a minivan Wednesday night

You've heard the famous Christmas song, “Grandma Got Run Over by Reindeer.” Well, I was singing a different version on Wednesday night — “I Got Run Over by a Minivan.”
I went to Walmart Wednesday night because my wife, Jenny — a.k.a., “Princess” — needed a few things.
We pulled up into the parking lot. It just started to rain. I was in Walmart for about an hour shopping and visiting with an ol' friends Bobby Heavener, Roger Mattox and Kathy Dalton.

Mark Allen, 49, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Talihina. Graveside services will be held at the New Talihina Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Bond set in animal cruelty case

December 15, 2011

Two men who were arrested Tuesday evening in what LeFlore County Sheriff Bruce Curnutt described as the most horrific case of animal cruelty he had ever seen, were released on bond Wednesday.
Albert McReynolds, 66, and William McReynolds, 18, both of Smithville, were being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center for animal cruelty stemming from multiple dead and emaciated animals found at their residence on Tuesday.

Poteau basketball teams split home openers with Spiro

Both Poteau and Spiro basketball fans had something good to cheer about in Tuesday night's games at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Pirates used a strong second half to down the Bulldogs 64-43 to win their home opener — and hand the ’Dogs their first loss of the season.
However, the Lady Bulldogs spoiled the home opener for the Lady Pirates with a 50-40 victory.

BOKOSHE — Arkoma Girls Basketball Coach Connie Ray was a little shocked by her team's 11th-seed drawing for the 2012 LeFlore County Tournament. While being maybe a little awestruck in Monday night's loss to the Howe Lady Lions, the tournament's top seed, the Lady Mustangs rebounded by defeated the Bokoshe Lady Tigers, the fourth-seed in the upcoming LeFlore County Tournament, by a score of 69-48 Tuesday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.

HEAVENER —The Heavener Wolves posted a 62-41 home victory over the Talihina Golden Tigers Tuesday night at the Heavener Gym.
Cameron 56, Gans 23: In Cameron, the Yellowjackets (8-1) jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one period and never looked back.
Editor's Note — Nothing was reported on Arkoma's game at Bokoshe by press time.

Poteau Youth Wrestling Club athletes do well in weekend Coweta, Hulbert tournaments

It was a good weekend for the Poteau Youth Wrestling Club last weekend in a pair of tournaments.
In the Coweta Tournament, the Club had several second-place finishes. Zane Hendrix, Ross Johnson, Drake Barbee, Bryce Edwards and Luke Brooks all were runners-up.
Bryson Terry and Jarrod Vineyard were third, while Jarrett Lilley and Kadin Repass were fourth.
Race Williams, Rae Hendrix, Dalton Edwards and Charles Graham participated but did not medal.
In the Hulbert Tournament, the Poteau Youth Wrestling Club's Division I athletes were awarded the second-place team award.
