Police search for property owner after good deed

August 12, 2011

A Poteau man recently
proved to local law
enforcement that honesty
still survives in this day
and age after he turned in
valuable property he had
found to the Poteau Police
Department.
Ted D. Kilgore, 73, of
Poteau, pulled up to a
Poteau business a few
weeks ago and to his
amazement found a container
lying in the parking
lot. When he went to
investigate, he discovered
it held a large amount of
coins.
While some people
would have placed it in
their vehicle and driven
away, Kilgore, realizing
that someone had lost their
treasure, put it in his vehicle
and headed for the

Problem a thing of the past

The manager of Poteau
Valley Improvement
Authority said Thursday
that the efforts of county
citizens and a break in the
weather has taken care of
the distribution problems
PVIA was facing just last
week.
Don Goforth said in a
phone interview that he
and his staff have seen
marked improvement at
the PVIA water treatment
plant since he contacted
the newspaper last week
asking citizens to voluntarily
conserve water during
peak hours.
The problem that PVIA
was beginning to see was
not with water levels at
Wister Lake, nor with the
treatment plant but with

Mother Nature rains out Thursday games; Thursday's Keota Invitational games rescheduled for today

Softball games rained out were Wister at Poteau, Leflore at Quinton, Whitesboro at Buffalo Valley and the Keota Invitational — where Arkoma, Howe, Pocola, Spiro and Talihina were playing.
Two baseball games were washed out completely — Cameron at Panola and Howe at Smithville.
Whitesboro's baseball game against Clayton in the Buffalo Valley festival was suspended by rain, with Clayton leading 2-1.

Poteau cross country teams' practice meet Saturday morning

August 12, 2011

The 2011 Poteau Practice Cross Country Meet will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates, coached by Tim Hall, will have two other teams competing with them — Heavener and Haworth.
The Lady Pirates were seventh at last year's state meet at Edmond's Mitch Park, while the Pirates were ninth.
While Heavener did not have a high school team last fall, a junior high team existed. Now, there is going to be a high school team this year under the coaching of Kristen Andrews.

Local church golf teams win league titles this summer

August 12, 2011

The Choctaw Country Club's Church League Golf completed Aug. 1, which completed its sixth season of existence. The league lasts eight weeks each summer, and has been a big success — and has grown each year.
The league divides its 18 teams into three flights after six weeks of play.

Summer's over (sort of) — school started Thursday

August 12, 2011

I can't believe that school has started already! Where did summer go? I know a lot of you folks have kids going off to college, too. It must be tough for those parents to see them go, unless they're going to Carl Albert State College. They call it “The Empty Nest Syndrome.” I think it's harder on mothers than fathers. But hang in there parents, it will be all right because you have total control over the remote control to your TV and you can watch football all the time.

Poteau girls beat Wister in fall season opener

August 11, 2011

WISTER — The Poteau Lady Pirates did their best to put pressure on the defense of the Wister Lady Wildcats in Tuesday night's opener. For the most part, they did.
Poteau took advantage of two Wister errors, four wild pitches and a passed ball en route to a 10-0, four-inning, run-rule victory.

Talihina pitcher no-hits Howe in Keota Invitational; Arkoma, Spiro also post victories on Day 1

August 11, 2011

KEOTA — Talihina pitcher Malacha Austin threw a no-hitter, and aided her own cause by hitting one of her team's three home runs, as the Lady Golden Tigers run ruled the Howe Lady Lions 12-0 in a four-inning contest in the opening round of the Keota Invitational Tuesday night.
The Arkoma Lady Mustangs made a successful return to high school softball as they defeated the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 3-2 to open their season with a victory.
