William “Buddy” Leaton Guinn Jr., 69, of Heavener died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, in Poteau. Buddy, a lifelong area resident, was born Feb. 14, 1942, in Heavener to William Leaton and Melva (Welton) Guinn.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Heavener, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam era. A 1960 graduate of Heavener High School, Buddy attended business college in Oklahoma City before joining the Navy. He was a well-known and liked plumber in the area.
Iris Mae Goins McCullough, 80, a native of Cameron, was born to Dock L. Goins and Lydia V. Crenshaw on April 29, 1931.
Iris died on Jan. 2, 2012. She attended Poteau High School and moved to California in 1949. She met her future husband, James T. McCullough and married in Atwater, Calif., in August, 1949.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Jeffrey; and grandson, Jeffrey. She is also preceded in death by her three brothers and one sister, Clyde, Woodrow and Harvey and Irene.

As I look at 2011 in the rearview mirror, I, too, am proud of the exploits of champions of LeFlore County. Kudos to the Talihina Golden Tigers and their Class 2A state basketball championship. Most people don’t realize they were only four points away from being a three-time state champion.
Tyler Tustin gained the second state championship for the Pirates in wrestling, and he has two more years to wrestle.
Alumni football is coming to Poteau. Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games.
Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up, and the first 40 players on each team get to play.
The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home-field advantage.
Last year, hundreds of players and thousands of fans swarmed stadiums to watch their home town heroes strap it on one more time.
This year, Gridiron Alumni would like to bring alumni football to the whole state of Oklahoma.
The 2012 He-Man Women Haters Club Poteau Chapter had its second annual He-Man Polar Bear Bass Tournament Saturday at Grasshopper Landing on Broken Bow Lake. There were 12 boats in the tournament field, with the temperatures in the 60s — it was just a perfect day.
Gary “The Jig Master” Steelman and Judd “Van Damm” Wann took home first place with a haul of 13.15 pounds and pocketing $1,000.
Haskell “Hack Attack” Higgins and “The Boy Wonder” A.J. Higgins came in second (11.64 pounds), while Jason “Glitter” Wickware and “The” Chad Warner came in third (11.23).
