Eva Jewel Brown, 93 of Spiro went to her eternal home in Heaven on Oct. 24, 2012.
She was born Sept. 28, 1919, to David Vernal and Julia Lee “Dollie” Newburn Argo. She lived her childhood years in Hoyt, where she fell in love with Lilliard Brown. They were married in 1942 and had two daughters, Brenda and Julia.
Eva Jewel was a 1938 graduate of Stigler High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1946, Master’s of teaching in 1964 and special educatIon certificate in 1977, all from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

Bobbie Don Smith, 65, of Spiro died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro. Burial will be in Monroe Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday.

Trick or treating for a cause

Poteau High School Thespian Troupe 3283 has announced its participation in the Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat program sponsored by the International Thespian Society and the Educational Theatre Association.
On October 31, Troupe members will be out among area trick-or-treaters collecting dry and canned food for donation to the Kibois food pantry.

Poteau faces another must-win football game tonight at Broken Bow; new coach, senior TE will get to face former players

When the final three football games of the season were approaching, the Poteau Pirates knew that they had to go 3-0 to make the playoffs.
The Pirates took care of the first game, a 41-21 win over Muldrow on Oct. 18 at Costner Stadium.
“We played real well,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. “Muldrow is a team that's played a lot of people close. It felt good to get that one out of the way, and get back to our winning ways. Hopefully, we can get on a roll again. We're beat up, but we're ready to go.”

Playoff berths at stake make tonight's Pocola-Panama game much more exciting

If one visits the Pocola High School football fieldhouse, a clock is hanging on the wall which counts down the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the next Pocola-Panama football game. That clock will hit zero at 7:30 tonight when the two archrivals meet at Panama's George Ollie Stadium in a crucial District 2A-6 contest.

Heavener looks to end football losing streak with Senior Night win over Idabel Warriors

The Heavener Wolves football team is in the midst of a four-game losing streak since winning their District 3A-8 opener 47-17 over the Valliant Bulldogs on Sept. 21 at Harvey Stadium. Since then, the losing streak has seeemed to center around the oppposing teams making big plays against the Heavener defenesive unit.
With the Wolves (3-5 overall, 1-4 in district play) entertaining the Idabel Warriors (2-6, 1-4) at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Harvey Stadium for Senior Night, a win is just want the doctor ordered.
