Arkoma football players honored by District C-4; Mustang fullback/lineman alternate for 8-Man All-Star Game in June

Four Arkoma Mustangs football players were named to the All-District C-4 Team this season.
Receiver Tyree Nolden made the first team all-district, while linebacker Talon Woolsey, offensive lineman Austin Morales and utility player Nathan Willis made the second team all-district.
A fifth Mustang, fullback/lineman Tyler Ruston, could have one more football game in his career as he is an alternate for the 8-Man All-Star Game, which will be June 22 at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami.

Wendal J. Hull, 80, of Arkoma died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Spiro.

Several Poteau residents without heat after gas line breaks

A broken gas line left several Poteau residents without heat during the onslaught of a winter storm.
According to Bob Neissl, senior vice president of operations with Arkansas Oklahoma Gas Corp. the company the outage occurred Christmas night. Neissl said the break in the gas line affected residents on Reynolds, Grady and Parker avenues, along with some homes on Witteville Road.
“Water got into the line from a leak and disrupted the service,” Neissl said. “It's a low-pressure system and water can enter the line from a leak.”
Neissl said services should be restored by Wednesday evening.

Winter weather leaves area roads icy and dangerous

According to LeFlore County Emergency Management Director, Michael Davidson, the southern portion of LeFlore county saw the highest totals in accumulated snow after Tuesday's winter storm. Davidson said residents of Big Cedar and Heavener received the most snow after eight inches blanketed the communities. He said most of the county, including Poteau, received 5 inches of snow.
Davidson said the storm moved into the county about noon and by 1:30, snow began sticking to the roads. Travel advisories were issued asking drivers to stay off the roads unless it was an emergency.

Mansfield woman injured in roll over accident

A Mansfield, Ark., woman received minor injuries after she lost control of her vehicle and rolled down an embankment.
According to the accident report released by the Poteau Police Department, Stephine Lee Gavelis, 26, was driving a gray 2000 Mercury Cougar north on the Cavanal Scenic Expressway approximately half a mile south of the Walmart exit when Gavelis lost control of her vehicle.

Two men arrested Monday after car chase

Poteau police officers arrested two fleeing suspects Monday afternoon suspected of burglarizing a Poteau residence earlier that morning.
According to Poteau Chief of Police Stephen Fruen, Detective Mark Kannady was driving on North Broadway about 1:45 p.m. when he spotted red extended-cab Ford Ranger pickup matching the description of a truck at a burglary Monday morning. When Kannady attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver of the truck turned onto Oklahoma Avenue and sped away.

Former Spiro QB named MVP of Southwest Junior Conference; Mitchem vocally commits to New Mexico

Former Spiro quarterback Clayton Mitchem was named the Most Valuable Player of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference for the 2012 season.
Mitchem, who quarterbacked the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Norsemen to a top-10 junior-college ranking, established NEO school records for passing yards (2,201) and touchdowns (25) in a single season. He was 152-of-258 in passing.
Next season, Mitchem, who was named an All-Stater after the 2010 football season, will likely be donning the Red and Silver as he has vocally committed to the University of New Mexico.

First of all, let me wish all of you Merry Christmas, and let us not forget the reason for the season — the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
If the Good Lord was willin' and the creek didn't rise, I woke up this morning at my mom's duplex in Enid by beating the potential snow by arriving there on Christmas Eve. If I was lucky, I arrived before not only the snow, but Christmas as well!

Possible white Christmas for LeFlore County

The National Weather Service in Tulsa is predicting snow for Christmas in eastern Oklahoma. The NWS lists every county in the state as either under a winter storm warning or winter storm watch.
LeFlore County is currently under a winter storm warning.
The National Weather Service expects significant snowfall in eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas.
According to the NWS, precipitation will begin as rain before mixing with sleet and transitioning to snow early Christmas morning. The snow is expected to continue to fall through Christmas night.
