WILBURTON — This past weekend, things ended on a high note for the Poteau Pirates basketball team. The Pirates defeated the Eufaula Ironheads 46-34 to win the third-place game Saturday afternoon at the Wilburton Tournament.
Unfortunately, things didn't end on a high note for the Lady Pirates, who lost 49-46 in overtime to the Red Oak Lady Eagles in the third-place game Saturday afternoon.
Both teams suffered semifinal losses on Friday night. The Pirates lost 59-40 to the Red Oak Eagles, while the Lady Pirates fell to the host Wilburton Lady Diggers 48-37.
MIAMI, Okla. — Poteau High School wrestler Tyler Tustin won the title at 138 pounds at this past weekend's Miami Tournament. Tustin, the two-time Class 4A individual state champion at his weight class, beat Jay's two-time state qualifier 12-6, then defeated Jeff Bizzle of Bentonville, Ark., who was third in his respective state tournament last season, by a score of 3-2 and ended the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Miami's returning Class 5A state qualifier.
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder came into its Friday night contest against the Sacramento Kings at Chesapeake Energy Arena riding a nine-game winning streak. The streak continued to 10 games as the home team knocked off the Kings 103-93, and upped the NBA’s best record to 19-4.
The win set up a showdown between two of the top teams in the Western Conference as the Thunder played the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The game marked the fifth straight at home for the Thunder.

The Poteau Pirates had a winning football season in 2012, and were in the playoff hunt until Week 9 — and were perhaps the surprise team of District 4A-4. All of that did not go unnoticed when the All-District 4A-4 Team was named.
Two Pirates got special individual honors, and a total of 12 players made the All-District Team.
Jay Werner was named the Special Teams Player of the Year, while Trevor Shankle was the Offensive Lineman of the Year.
