Zerilda J. McCaughey

Zerilda J. McCaughey, 71, of Poteau died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.  Zerilda was born July 11, 1940, in Monticello, Mo., to Emmett Hayden and Clara May (Porter) Crain. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl McCaughey; daughter, Tina L. Murray; nine brothers and sisters. 
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Deana Kay Cottle of Kingman, Ariz;.  four grandsons, Sam Murray, Patrick Murray, Brock Cottle, Garrett Cottle; two granddaughters, Fawn Higgins, Chesnee Cottle; brother, Lloyd Crain  and five great-grandchildren. 

Luther A. Parham

Luther A. Parham, after 87 years of full life, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 22, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Visitation with family and friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Evans-Miller Funeral Home in Pocola.
Luther and his wife Bonita were married for 69 years and raised  12 children in Poteau. They owned and operated Parham Fruit Stand while supporting the family. They moved to Fort Smith, where he worked at Rheem Manufacturing until he retired.  
Luther was a proud man, hard worker and dedicated father and husband.

Lessie Mae McKinney Dell, 84, Spiro, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 24, at Old Cache Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.

William “Sonny” Reed Jr.

William “Sonny” Reed Jr. died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Springhill Baptist Church in Monroe, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Francis Jane Lankford

January 23, 2012

Francis Jane Lankford, 65, of Arkoma died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services will be  2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Evans Memorial Chapel in Pocola with Rev. Jim Cook officiating.  Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Cameron, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Pocola.

Miss CASC 2012

Tori Giles has been named Miss CASC 2012, replacing Cheyenne Carter. Dr. Brandon Webb, CASC President stated, “It is our sincere pleasure to bestow the Miss CASC title to Tori. She has been a wonderful student leader on our campus, and to now have her represent us as Miss CASC is an honor.”

Talihina, Howe girls reach tonight's championship game; Wister girls, Leflore boys win consolation championship contests

SPIRO — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers and the Howe Lady Lions will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Spiro Gym to decide who will claim the championship of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament.
Thursday night at the Spiro Gym, the third-seeded Lady Golden Tigers held off the second-seeded Spiro Lady Bulldogs 51-49 in the last championship semifinal contest.
In the first championship semifinal, the top-seeded Lady Lions had no problems with the fourth-seeded Bokoshe Lady Tigers in a 71-37 victory.
Spiro and Bokoshe will play for third place at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at the Spiro Gym.

Class A, B district assignments announced Thursday by OSSAA

The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association announced the Class A and B district assignments for this upcoming high school basketball playoffs.
In Class A, Cameron was named a district host, welcoming fellow county foe Arkoma as well as Clayton to town.
In Class B, two county schools were named district tourmament host schools. Leflore will entertain McCurtain in one district tournament, while Whitesboro will welcome Eagletown and Moyers to town.
Bokoshe, along with Midway, was sent to Kinta for a Class B District Tournament.
The Class A and B playoffs will begin Feb. 9.

Poteau wrestlers beat Wagoner, lose to Sallisaw in Class 4A District Duals

WAGONER — It was a good news, bad news scenario for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team at the Class 4 District Duals on Thursday.
The Pirates pulled off a 39-36 victory over the host Bulldogs, but they lost 49-21 to the Black Diamonds — who also beat the ’Dogs 42-27.
The fourth team in the Class 4A District Duals, the Fort Gibson Tigers, did not participate in Thursday's action because they are all dualing the other three teams in regular-season duals — all of which will go toward the district duals.
