Poteau, Heavener boys, Howe, Talihina girls make semifinals

HEAVENER — All the top seeds were victorious in Tuesday night's championship quarterfinal games of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament played at the Heavener Gym.
On the boys' side, second-seeded Poteau used a strong second half to down Talihina 49-32, while third-seeded Heavener got past Pocola 57-46.

Poteau wrestlers in Class 4A District Duals today at Wagoner; then, Pirates in Sallisaw Tournament over weekend

The postseason has arrived for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team. The Pirates will be in the Class 4A District Duals beginning at 5 p.m. today in Wagoner.
“We're real anxious,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “This is what we've been working toward all season. We've kind of had our ups and downs, but we're kind of coming into this on an upswing (two dual wins last Thursday against Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside and Talihina). We're looking for good things.”

Talihina wrestlers get first dual win of season, but miss out on dual state berth

VIAN — The good news for the Talihina Golden Tigers wrestling team was it got its first dual win, beating Keys (Park Hill) 54-30 during the Class 2A District Duals on Tuesday.
The not-so-good news was the Golden Tigers suffered losses in their other three duals on the day, losing to host Vian 78-6, Sequoyah-Tahlequah 42-36 and Quinton 42-30. Just 24 hours before, the Golden Tigers posted a win over Sequoyah-Tahlequah
The Golden Tigers (1-6 in duals this season) will finish their district dual competition at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hulbert.

Deer win the battle this year, but there is always next year

If you have a chance, come out and watch some of the Leflore County Tournament this weekend. It is a good chance to watch our area youth battling it out on the hardwood. Wister’s boys are in the semifinals for the first time since 1994 (at least that is when Jerry Carpenter and I decided). That is the year when some of my junior high players’ dads were playing.

Poteau girls get first victory of season, beat Whitesboro; Talihina, Howe boys, Heavener girls also victorious on Day 1 at Heavener

HEAVENER — There's finally a different number in the win column for the Poteau Lady Pirates.
The Lady Pirates got their first win of the season Monday afternoon as they opened play in the 2012 LeFlore County Tournament with a 47-25 victory over the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs at the Heavener Gym.

11th-seeded Arkoma girls upset No. 6 Wister; all other top seeds win at Bokoshe site

BOKOSHE — The first upset on the girls' side of the 2012 LeFlore County Tournament belongs to the Arkoma Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs, seeded 11th, upset No. 6 Wister 59-45 Monday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.
In the other three games at this site, the top seeds prevailed. In the other girls' game, fourth-seeded Bokoshe handled 13th-seeded Cameron 49-32. On the boys' side, No. 5 Cameron defeated No. 12 Arkoma 78-45, while No. 4 Wister was too much for 13th-seed and tournament-host Bokoshe 57-14.

Panama girls, Pocola boys win games at Spiro on opening night of LCT

SPIRO — The Panama Lady Razorbacks and the Pocola Indians posted opening-night wins in the 2012 LeFlore County Tournament Monday night at the Spiro Gym.
The Lady ’Backs handled archrival Pocola 45-28, while the Indians got past a pesky group of Whitesboro Bulldogs 66-53.
After four championship quarterfinals on Tuesday here, the contests today and tonight at the Spiro Gym will determine the match-ups for Friday's fifth-place games.

NEO picks up two OCAC road wins over Carl Albert

Free throws down the stretch proved to be the difference for the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Golden Norsemen in their 68-60 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference action Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Despite playing good defense and holding the NEO Lady Golden Norse to 57 points, it wasn't enough for the Lady Vikings in their 57-42 loss in the first game Monday night.

Talihina wrestlers get wins in triangular with Checotah at Sequoyah-Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH — While it was more of a practice triangular when the Talihina Golden Tigers wrestling team visited Sequoyah-Tahlequah along with Checotah Monday night, several locals got at least one win on the night.
Three Talihina matmen got two wins as Andrew Young (160 pounds), Dylan Chancellor (195) and Bryan Young (220) each beat their opponent from Sequoyah-Tahlequah and Checotah, while Brian Collins (182) got a win over his Checotah opponent as Sequoyah-Tahlequah did not have a 182-pounder.

Talihina Youth Wrestling Club brings home medals last weekend from Coweta Tournament

COWETA — Several members of the Talihina Youth Wrestling Club placed at last weekend's Coweta Tournament.
Derek Lester, Roederick Hornbuckle and Bryan Young all won their respective weight class titles.
Heath Humphreys and Rodney Killingsworth were second, Parker Judkins and Bryan Lester were third and Triston Blummel and Sawyer Blue were fourth.
