Irene Hanna Hodges

Irene Hodges, 77, of Lenexa, Kan., died peacefully Feb. 26, 2012.
Irene was born Nov. 27, 1934 in Williams to Arthur and Muriel (Floyd) Hanna. She graduated from Cameron High School. She received her master’s degree in education and taught for over 40 years at Washington Elementary in Olathe, Kan. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Shawnee, Kan., since 1956. 

Debra Ann Hale Blake

Debra Ann Hale Blake, 52, of Poteau died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Debra was born Jan. 15, 1960, in Poteau to Willie Lee and Ada (Sharp) Hale. She was a housewife. She was a very active member of Trinity Baptist Church where she cooked often and taught Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her parents.

NWTF Banquet Set

The annual banquet for the LeFlore County Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be on March 8. Doors open at 5:30. The NWTF banquets is open to the public and it is an exciting event for all. The banquet allows people of all ages to get access to exclusive merchandise and help raise funds for wild turkey conservation and important programs that introduce the outdoors to women and children. The NWTF is a national non-profit organization that works towards the conservation of the wild turkey.

Carl Albert baseball team loses to NE Texas, splits with Tyler on Saturday

The Carl Albert State College baseball team suffered its first losses of the season over the weekend on a two-city, three-game Texas trip.
The trip ended Sunday with a 9-2 loss to Northeast Texas in Mount Pleasant.
On Saturday, the Vikings split a doubleheader on the road against Tyler, Texas, winning the opener 4-1 but losing the nightcap in heartbreaking fashion 4-3.
The Vikings will return to action in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Clarskville, Ark., against the University of the Ozarks junior varsity. The twinbill will be the only action this week for the Vikings.

Poteau matman repeats at state champion, named 4A Outstanding Wrestler

OKLAHOMA CITY — Up until last year, there was only one Poteau Pirate who had won a state wrestling title — Jerry Collins in 1998.
Then last year, then Poteau sophomore Tyler Tustin, who happens to be Collins' cousin, won state at 130 pounds. Now a junior, Tustin made some more history Saturday night in the Class 4A State Tournament at State Fair Arena.
Tustin repeated as state champion, winning the 132-pound state final match 2-1 over Newcastle's Steven Fernandez, to become Poteau's only two-time state champion

Poteau girls win regional consolation championship, bound for area tournament

SALLISAW — The Cinderella playoff ride for the Poteau Lady Pirates continues.
The Lady Pirates won the Class 4A Regional Tournament consolation championship game with a 59-44 win over the Stilwell Lady Indians Saturday afternoon at Paul Post Fieldhouse.
The Lady Pirates will face the Jay Lady Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Muskogee Civic Center in the Class 4A Area Tournament. Three more wins will put them into next week's Class 4A State Tournament.

Poteau boys stave off elimination for second straight day at Class 4A Regional Tournament

SALLISAW — The Poteau Pirates basketball team took the second of three steps to get to next week's Class 4A Area Tournament in Muskogee.
The Pirates defeated the Broken Bow Savages 38-29 Friday night at Paul Post Fieldhouse to reach Saturday afternoon's consolation title game of the Class 4A Regional Tournament.

Spiro boys win consolation championship, but girls suffer loss in regional championship

The Spiro Bulldogs brought home some hardware for the second straight weekend. In a battle of Bulldogs, Spiro handled Valliant 61-47 to win the Class 3A Regional Tournament's consolation championship game Saturday afternoon at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Lady Bulldogs tried to do likewise with bringing some hardware home for a second straight weekend, but they fell to the Salina Lady Wildcats 59-36 in Saturday night's regional title game at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.

Howe girls, Wister boys fall in regional title games; Panama, Wister girls, Pocola boys eliminated

ADA — Ada High School's Cougar Activity Center was not very kind to LeFlore County's Class 2A basketball teams playing there Friday and Saturday in the Class 2A Regional Tournament.
The Howe Lady Lions and the Wister Wildcats lost their regional title games Saturday night. The Lady Lions fell 40-29 to Amber-Pocasset, while the ‘Cats lost 71-47 to Haworth.
