Denver Ray Chronister, 83, of Wister died Monday, March 26, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Bethel Baptist Church in Wister. Burial will be inn San Bois Cemetery, Kinta, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
A memorial for Harriet K. Coleman, formerly of Summerfield, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Evans and Miller Funeral Home in Poteau. Burial will be in Summerfield Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
Sue Wortham, 86, of Broken Arrow, formerly of Spiro, died Sunday, March 25, 2012. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel, Spiro. Burial will be in San Bois Cemetery, Kinta.
Jean E. Simkins, 85, of Conway, Ark., died March 25, 2012. Born April 19, 1926, in Malvern, Ark., she was the daughter of George R. and Amanda Thompson Britt. A member of Zion Baptist Church, she taught at Arkansas School for the Blind for over 20 years before retiring in 1987 then taught at the Mayflower School District for a number of years. She loved her grandchildren, church, reading and soap operas.
William Henry Thompson, 85, of Marietta, passed away peacefully in his home on March 26, 2012. A unique blend of sailor and rancher, his word was his bond. Bill’s outspoken personality and sense of humor are remembered by all who knew him.
A new Oklahoma state record largemouth bass was caught Friday, March 23, at Cedar Lake in southeast Oklahoma. The fish weighed 14 lbs. 12.3 oz. and was caught by Poteau angler Benny Williams, Jr. while on a camping trip at the 78-acre LeFlore Co. lake.
Williams caught the bass at 11 a.m. on a ¼ oz. Striker King jig. This fish measured 26 inches in length and 22 3/8 inches in girth.
Williams' fish breaks a state record held since 1999 when William Cross caught a 14-lb. 11.52-oz. bass from Broken Bow Lake.
A Talihina woman has been formally charged with first degree manslaughter charges following the results of an analysis of her blood after a fatal collision in September.
Jacqueline Renee Harjo, 44, of Talihina, is facing two charges stemming from the accident, Manslaughter first degree and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
According to the affidavit in the case, Harjo was driving a 1994 Ford pickup south bound on U.S. Highway 271 near Cox Lane when she crossed the center lane and struck a north bound Lincoln Town Car driven by Galen Benton.
I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break, because now that it's over it means pretty much non-stop baseball and slow-pitch softball from here out.
This week is the Wister Tournament (its bracket will be in Thursday's edition) is this weekend. The Crowder Tournament for Cameron and Panama will begin Wednesday.
This week for softball will be the Red Oak Tournament, which will have Poteau, Cameron, Howe and Panama representing LeFlore County, Heavener's girls will be at the Gore Tournament and Talihina's girls will be in the Hartshorne Festival.
The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team began the post-Spring Break portion of their season in fine fashion Monday afternoon as they run ruled the Pocola Lady Indians 9-0.
Just as the sunshine at the end of last week's Spring Break was much welcomed, so, too, was a Poteau Pirate baseball team victory in the final game of the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Tournament.
The Pirates defeated the Sallisaw-Central Tigers 11-5 Saturday afternoon at Town Creek Park in the final game of this year's event.
