Judy Ann Williams, 53, of Sallisaw, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, in Van Buren, Ark.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Talihina United Methodist Church. Burial will be the New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Reita Jeanne Hardin

Reita Jeanne Hardin, 74, of Poteau died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, in Poteau.
Reita was born April 6, 1937, in Fanshawe to T. Clyde and Lucille (Kellum) Hardin. She was a homemaker. Reita was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Fanshawe. She was preceded in death by her parents.

First annual Oklahoma Slam

The weekend of March 16 has been announced as the date for the first annual Oklahoma Slam.
The Oklahoma Slam will be a combination skateboard camp and contest at the Skatepark Off Broadway located at 105 Reynolds and South Broadway in Poteau.
At 4 p.m. on March 16, the event begins with skate camp, providing tips and help with contest runs to everyone from beginners to advanced skaters. On hand at the skate camp will be skateboarding legend Bill Danforth and the Short Bus Crew.

Friends of Heavener Runestone to host Viking/Celtic Festival

The sounds of music and festivities will soon be wafting through the air above Heavener as the Heavener Viking / Celtic Festival gets underway.
The Friends of Heavener Runestone would like to announce their upcoming festival to take place at the Runestone to help raise park operation funds. The festival is scheduled to kick off on March 17-18 with fun, entertainments and games for all ages.
Festival go-ers are encouraged to don their finest Celtic or Viking garbs and join the friends for a two-day event guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Kansas City Southern is partnering with the Poteau Police Department to conduct an Operation Lifesaver “Officer on a Train” event today to promote public safety at railroad grade crossings.
The event will start at 4 p.m. at the Dewey Street crossing in Poteau.

Hinson charged in death of infant

A LeFlore County man will receive a life sentence for killing his girlfriend's 3-month-old baby.
A jury of seven women and five men were sequestered Friday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m. after the conclusion of a murder trial involving defendant Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson who was accused of the murder of a 3-month-old infant.
At 9:25 p.m. the jury rendered their verdict, finding Aaron Ray Wesley Hinson, 24, guilty of first degree murder involving a child. The jury rendered a guilty plea with a recommended sentence of life.

Northside spoils home baseball opener for Poteau

After a big victory Monday afternoon at Roland, the Poteau Pirates baseball team was hoping to keep the winning ways going in Tuesday afternoon's home opener at Town Creek Park. It was not to be.
The Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside Grizzlies scored in all five innings and ended up run ruling the Pirates 17-5.

HEAVENER — After getting strong pitching in their season-opening win on Monday from the combination of Parker Johnson and Grant Severe, along came Connor Mangham for the Pocola Indians.
Mangham thew a no-hitter, and missed out on a perfect game by a batter, as the Indians blanked the Heavener Wolves 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Mangham struck out 17 batters, and only allowed one batter to reach by a base on balls. That baserunner was later caught stealing on a strikeout-throwout double play, so that the Indian starter only faced the minimum 21 batters for the game.

SALLISAW — The Poteau Lady Pirates made it 2-for-2 to start the season as they run ruled the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds 17-5 Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates scored twice in the first inning and six runs in the second inning for an 8-0 lead. Most of the Poteau runs were unearned due to Sallisaw miscues.
Shelby Standridge scored four runs, Natalee King and Meagan Ryburn three runs apiece and two runs scored each by Kylie Brown, Brenna Vise and Montana Roll. Sidnee Ward scored the other run.

Western sweeps softball pair from Carl Albert

The Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers came to town and left with a pair of wins over the Carl Albert State College softball team Wednesday afternoon.
Western rallied to take the opener 8-5, then run ruled Carl Albert in the nightcap 11-0 in six innings.
The Lady Vikings will return to action in a 2 p.m. Monday doubleheader at home against Northeast Texas.
