Angler lands new Oklahoma state record largemouth bass

A new Oklahoma state record largemouth bass was caught Friday, March 23, at Cedar Lake in southeast Oklahoma. The fish weighed 14 lbs. 12.3 oz. and was caught by Poteau angler Benny Williams, Jr. while on a camping trip at the 78-acre LeFlore Co. lake.
Williams caught the bass at 11 a.m. on a ¼ oz. Striker King jig. This fish measured 26 inches in length and 22 3/8 inches in girth.
Williams' fish breaks a state record held since 1999 when William Cross caught a 14-lb. 11.52-oz. bass from Broken Bow Lake.

First degree manslaughter filed in Talihina fatality

A Talihina woman has been formally charged with first degree manslaughter charges following the results of an analysis of her blood after a fatal collision in September.
Jacqueline Renee Harjo, 44, of Talihina, is facing two charges stemming from the accident, Manslaughter first degree and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.
According to the affidavit in the case, Harjo was driving a 1994 Ford pickup south bound on U.S. Highway 271 near Cox Lane when she crossed the center lane and struck a north bound Lincoln Town Car driven by Galen Benton.

I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break, because now that it's over it means pretty much non-stop baseball and slow-pitch softball from here out.
This week is the Wister Tournament (its bracket will be in Thursday's edition) is this weekend. The Crowder Tournament for Cameron and Panama will begin Wednesday.
This week for softball will be the Red Oak Tournament, which will have Poteau, Cameron, Howe and Panama representing LeFlore County, Heavener's girls will be at the Gore Tournament and Talihina's girls will be in the Hartshorne Festival.

Poteau girls get home victory over Pocola

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team began the post-Spring Break portion of their season in fine fashion Monday afternoon as they run ruled the Pocola Lady Indians 9-0.

Poteau boys end Wood Bat Festival with victory over Sallisaw-Central

Just as the sunshine at the end of last week's Spring Break was much welcomed, so, too, was a Poteau Pirate baseball team victory in the final game of the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Tournament.
The Pirates defeated the Sallisaw-Central Tigers 11-5 Saturday afternoon at Town Creek Park in the final game of this year's event.

Cameron, Panama teams split games in Poteau Wood Bat Festival

CAMERON — The two LeFlore County baseball teams, the Cameron Yellowjackets and the Panama Razorbacks, who were at this site of the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Festival both split their two games in which they played.
The ’Jackets defeated Moss 5-1 Friday afternoon, but lost by the same score Saturday afternoon to Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside.
Both of the Hogs' games were Friday. They run ruled Haileyville 15-0, but then were run ruled themselves 12-2 by Sallisaw-Central.

Spiro handles Haskell in only Class 3A Preview game played

SPIRO — Spring Break's rain didn't totally wash out the 2012 Class 3A Preview this past weekend. One game got played, and the host Spiro Bulldogs got themselves a win.
The ’Dogs jumped out to an early lead and rode the advantage to a 10-2 victory over the Haskell Haymakers Saturday afternoon.

Dale avenges title game loss to Wister

DALE — Last spring, the Wister Wildcats defeated the Dale Pirates to win the Class 2A State Tournament.
In a match-up Saturday afternoon between the same two teams which came about due to the Union City Festival being rained out Thursday and Friday, the Pirates avenged that loss — and in a big way.
The combination of a fast start and four Wister errors, the Pirates ended up run ruling the ’Cats 12-0.

Carl Albert baseball team gets road sweep against Rose State; Vikings, Lady Vikings return to action this afternoon

MIDWEST CITY — It was a happy weekend for the Carl Albert State College baseball team. The Vikings posted a doubleheader sweep of Rose State College by scores of 4-1 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at Ival Goodman Field. It begins three straight days of action for the Vikings, who will play the Bacone College junior varsity in a home twinbill at 1 p.m. Wednesday followed by a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader Thursday against Seminole State College.

Poteau Spirit Center gymnasts place, compete last weekend at Claremore

CLAREMORE — Several members of the Poteau Spirit Center gymnastic team competed last weekend, with three members placing.
Michaela Wolf placed first in her age group, Shyanne Hutchison was runner-up in her age group and Cheyenne Wilbourn was runner-up in all-around in the age 8-and-younger division — all in Level 3.
Other gymnasts competing were Holly Bowman, Allison Blagg, Skylee Maynard, Courtney Kitchens, Katie Magness and Anniston Baker.
Three gymnasts, Corbie Buffington, Keegan Hudlow and Jenna Bowman, competed at Level 1, and took home several ribbons and a medal.
