Bobby “Bob” Gene Olive, 79, of Bonne Terre, Mo., formerly of Heavener, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Bonne Terre. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Dowden Funeral Home in Heavener. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Heavener.

Ashley Lemont “Monty” Brown

Ashley Lemont “Monty” Brown, 50, of Wister died Saturday, April 14, 2012, in Poteau.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Pilgrim’s Rest Church in Reichert with Rev. Bob Cherry officiating. Burial will be in Reichert Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Jimmie Dean Chestine

April 17, 2012

Jimmie Dean Chestine, 68, of Poteau died Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Jimmie was born Aug. 26, 1943, in Shady Point. Jimmie was a nurse for some 38 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Christine Wade; and brother, Don Chestine.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of the home; stepdaughters, Debra England of Panama, Kay and Michael Hargrove of Poteau; numerous step-grandchildren. 
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 at the Oakland Cemetery Pavilion, Poteau, with Rev. Jack Covey officiating. 

Poteau Invitational set this afternoon at Costner Stadium

Last year, the Poteau High School track teams put on more of a practice meet when they had the Poteau Invitational. Not so this year.
There will be approximately 20 boys and 20 girls teams coming to town for today's meet, which will begin at 1 p.m. this afternoon at Costner Stadium.

Can you believe that the 2012 spring postseason has arrived — at least for a lot of our baseball and slow-pitch softball teams?
It's district-tourament week for the Class A and B baseball teams as well as all of the slow-pitch softball teams with the exception of Poteau.
The complete district-tournament schedule is listed at the end of this column.
One Last Tournament
There is one last regular-season tournament in which there will be LeFlore County representation as the Poteau Pirates will be in the Fort Gibson Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

WILBURTON — The good news was the Poteau Pirates reached Saturday's title game of the Coal Miner's Classic, but the not-so-good news was they got to meet one of the best teams around in the Eufaula Ironheads who defeated the Pirates 10-2 in Saturday's title game.
The Pirates reached the title game with a 11-7 victory over the Muldrow Bulldogs Friday night.
The Heavener Wolves, the other LeFlore County team in the field, were eliminated in the consolation semifinals by the host Wilburton Diggers 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday.

Spiro boys fall in Tiger Shootout title game to Red Oak Eagles; Cameron boys lose in consolation finals to Vian

SALLISAW — The Spiro Bulldogs tried to rally to win the 2012 Tiger Shootout title game on Saturday, but they came up a run short as they lost 5-4 to the Red Oak Eagles, who eliminated the Pocola Indians 8-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The ‘Dogs reached the title game with a 5-1 win over the Westville Yellowjackets earlier in the day after defeating the Keys (Park Hill) Cougars 4-3 in nine innings in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Cameron Yellowjackets lost the consolation championship game on Saturday, falling 7-3 to the Vian Wolverines.

Heavener girls split final two games at Battiest Spring Classic; Howe Lady Lions eliminated by Hugo Lady Buffaloes

BATTIEST — The Heavener Lady Wolves split their final two games at the Battiest Spring Classic on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Broken Bow — which lost 10-9 to Heavener on Friday afternoon — after beating Buffalo Valley 15-7.
The Howe Lady Lions, the other LeFlore County team in the tournament field, lost 7-2 to the Hugo Lady Buffaloes to be eliminated from the event.
In Heavener's win over Buffalo Valley, the Lady Wolves, whose home game Monday with Hugo was canceled by the Lady Buffaloes, broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run second inning for a 5-2 lead — an advantage they never lost.

The Panama High School baseball program is sponsoring a fundraiser in connection with Dunn Ford in Stigler and Ford Motor Company.
From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the Panama Elementary School, people can test drive up to six different vehicles, with $20 per car test driven being donated to the Panama High School baseball program.
There will be a free lunch prepared by Arvest Bank. For additional information, call Chris Gollihare at (918) 385-2842.

Poteau soccer teams split games Friday at Stilwell

April 17, 2012

STILWELL — The Poteau High School soccer teams split their district games against Stilwell here on Friday.
The Pirates routed the Indians 8-1, but the Lady Pirates fell 4-0 to the Lady Indians.
The Poteau teams will return to action today and tonight against county rival Heavener at Harvey Stadium. The girls' game will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 7 p.m. The Wolves are atop the district standings going into tonight's game.
