Laverne Henson

April 30, 2012

Laverne Henson, 70, of Cameron died Friday, April 27, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Jan. 11, 1942, at Mena, Ark., to James Cornelius and Gertrude L. (Mills) Moore.  She was a faithful Jehovah’s Witness since September 1961.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Imajene Bryant. 
Laverne is survived by her husband, Dorsey Wayne Henson of the home; a brother, James R. Moore of Cameron; a sister Norma Evans of Poteau; numerous nieces and nephews; other family, friends and loved ones.  

Earl C. Seaton

Earl C. Seaton, 88, of Spiro, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, in Spiro. Earl was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Lavaca, Ark., to O.H. and Elvia (Wise) Seaton. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Earl was a mechanic, working at Turman-Pierce for years. He was a farmer and rancher. Earl was a wonderful father and grandfather.

Cameron boys lose in regional title game to Wright City Lumberjax to see season come to an end

CAMERON — Last fall, the Cameron Yellowjackets missed out on two trips to state, losing both the championship and consolation championship game in the Class A Regional Tournament. The same ill fate happened to them once more.
The Yellowjackets lost 6-4 to the Wright City Lumberjax in the title game of the Class A Regional Tournament Thursday afternoon.
Cameron reached the regional title game as it outlasted Okay 11-10 in Friday afternoon's first game.

Heavener girls make state, win regional title

McALESTER — There will be LeFlore County representation at next week's state slow-pitch softball tournament.
The Heavener Lady Wolves won the Class 5A Regional Tournament Thursday afternoon by outlasting the Henryetta Lady Knights 6-5 in nine innings in the championship game. Earlier in the day, the Lady Wolves beat the Valliant Lady Bulldogs 11-8.
The Lady Wolves will play Blanchard at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Class 5A State Tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Poteau girls fall in regional title game to Muskogee

MUSKOGEE — Last fall, one Muskogee County team, the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers, beat the Poteau Lady Pirates in the Class 4A Fast-Pitch Regional Tournament to deny the Lady Pirates a trip to state. Thursday afternoon in the Class 6A Slow-Pitch Regional Tournament, another Muskogee County team dashed state-tournament hopes for Poteau.
The Lady Pirates lost 11-4 to the Muskogee Lady Roughers in Thursday's regional title game to end Poteau's season.

Howe's softball season ends with nine-inning loss to Preston in 3A Regional Tournament

DEWAR — If there was such a thing as a gut-wrenching loss, the Howe Lady Lions softball team may have suffered it Thursday afternoon in the Class 3A Regional Tournament.
After tying the game with a two-run seventh inning, the Preston Lady Pirates scored once in the ninth inning to down the Lady Lions 6-5 to end their season.
The Lady Lions (8-12) scored twice in the first and fourth innings for a 4-0 lead, only to see the Lady Pirates cut the deficit to 4-3 by the sixth inning.

Spiro boys sweep Heavener to win 3A District Tournament

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs took the first step in reaching this year's Class 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs swept the Heavener Wolves by scores of 14-2 and 18-8 to win the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday.
The ’Dogs (19-10) will find out Monday where and who they will play in next week's Class 3A Regional Tournament.
The Wolves end the season at 7-14.

Wister boys take two from Panama to win Class 2A District Tournament title; Wildcat pitcher tosses no-hitter in district-clinching game

WISTER — The Wister Wildcats are a third of the way to defending their Class 2A state title.
The Wildcats swept the Panama Razorbacks by scores of 8-0 and 12-0 to win the Class 2A District Tournament on Thursday.
The ’Cats (19-2) will find out Monday who and where they will play in next week's Class 2A Regional Tournament.
The Hogs end the season at 7-11.
In the opener, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Wildcats scored three runs for a 3-0 lead.

Pocola splits district games with Sallisaw-Central Tigers; rubber game was slated to take place Friday afternoon

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians baseball team had to wait one more day for the chance to celebrate a district title once again.
The Indians split the first two games of the Class 2A District Tournament Friday with the Sallisaw-Central Tigers, taking the nightcap 9-1 after losing 6-5 in the opener.
In the nightcap, Tanner Francis dominated the Tigers as he struck out six batters in a complete-game win.

Poteau boys' season comes to an end with losses to Stilwell in Class 4A District Tournament

STILWELL — The Poteau High School baseball season came to an end Thursday in the Class 4A District Tournment.
The Pirates suffered a 3-2 loss in the first game against the Stilwell Indians, who then took Game 2 by a score of 9-1.
The Pirates end the season at 13-15.
In the opener, the Indians (32-3) scored once in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI grounder by Wilson Klutts scoring Jace Pitchford and a passed ball scoring Klutts.
