Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline Offers Resources to Help Quit for Good
POTEAU - Mother’s Day is a day of expressing even more appreciation and gratitude than usual for mothers everywhere, especially our own and those of our children and grandchildren.
Few gifts can last longer or prove more meaningful than giving up tobacco. Doing so is a loving and potentially life-saving act for both mothers and their loved ones who use tobacco, because approximately 6,200 Oklahoma residents die each year from tobacco-related illnesses.
SPIRO — For Spiro Bulldog baseball seniors, this week was beginning to look more and more that it would not happen for them.
However, after coming up so close the last couple of seasons, the Bulldogs finally knocked the door down to the Class 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs will meet Verdigris at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the state quarterfinals at Edmond Memorial High School.
The ’Dogs beat a longtime nemesis to win last weekend's Class 3A Regional Tournament, the Eufaula Ironheads.
WISTER — This spring high school baseball season marks the fifth consecutive high school baseball season in which the Wister Wildcats have ended it with a state-tournament appearance. The ’Cats, who will play the Oktaha Tigers at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park in the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinals, have made state in either the spring or the fall since the 2010 spring season.
After a “grind” of a season, as Carl Albert State College Baseball Coach Mark Pollard calls the regular season, the postseason has arrived for the Vikings as they will begin play in the Region II Tournament, which begins today and ends Sunday at Bartlesville's Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings (37-19) will meet a team they have played for the last four games of the regular season — the Redlands Community College Cougars. The Vikings and the Cougars do battle at noon today.
OKLAHOMA CITY — For the fourth straight game, the Poteau Pirates soccer team was forced to hit the road in the Class 4A playoffs. The first three games, the Pirates found a way to get the job done, but against the Mount Saint Mary Rockets, their run at a state championship came to a screeching halt as they lost 1-0 to the Rockets in a shootout.
The Pirates (10-6) dominated everywhere except on the scoreboard. In the two halves of regulation and the two overtime periods the teams played, the Pirates had 20 good shots on goal while the Rockets could only put 11 shots on goal.
HINTON — Cameron sophomore Kody Whitehead tied for 14th at the Class 2A State Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course. His three-round total was 79-80-81—240.
Whitehead missed by three shots in being in a playoff for the 10th-place medalist, which eventually was won by Amber-Pocasset's Brandon Pfeifle — who was in a three-way tie at 237 after the initial 54 holes.
Rejoice Christian's Justin Strathe was the individual state champion with a 74-74-71—219, winning by two shots over Luther's Ryan Stults (77-73-71—221).
Tonight, the Wister Wildcats baseball team will play Oktaha in the Class 2A State Tournament at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park in the state quarterfinals. These boys are making their fifth straight trip to state. I would like to wish them the best of luck!

There were some hunters that fared pretty well during turkey hunting season. Russell Broussard spent 3.5 hours on a hunt before taking a nice bird last week. Nathan Janway took his daughter, Cheyann Smith, out on Saturday, and she shot a jake.
