Alice Jean Martin, 73, a determined but generous, practical and caring mother and grandmother, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, in Midland, Texas.
Born Aug. 21, 1938, in Leflore to Minnie and Sol Kitchens, Alice was the ultimate civil servant, retiring from the Social Security Administration after many years of faithful service and also following the love of her life, Billy Martin, across the world throughout his 20-plus years of service in the Army.

The Major League All-Star Game is not until July 10 at Kansas City's Kaufman Stadium, but for one LeFlore County softball player, there's an all-star game Monday night.
Poteau Lady Pirate Shelby Standridge will play in the 2012 Sparkler College Exposure All-Star Game Monday night in Westminister, Colo.
Standridge, who plays with the Oklahoma Elite softball team in the summer which went to the World Series last August in Kansas City, Kan., will showcase her talents in both the outfield and at shortstop while representing her team at the Sparkler College Exposure All-Star Tournament.

The 15th annual Poteau Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Monday at Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
Lunch and check-in will begin at noon Monday.
The entry fee is $65 per person or $130 per two-player team. Two mulligans will be available for $10, with a limit of four per team.

Dorothy Maxine Jones, 76, of Brushy Mountain died Friday, June 22, 2012. Graveside services will held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, at New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.

Christopher Kenyon Simpson, 26, of Fort Coffee, was arrested Thursday evening by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation in connection with the double murder of Ka'Loni Flynn and her unborn child.
Investigator Shawn Ward, OSBI, Investigator Travis Saulsbery, LeFlore County District Attorney's Office and members of the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department arrested Simpson at his home without incident.
Thursday night's home game for the Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team against Okmulgee at Poteau High School's Town Creek Park was canceled due to Okmulgee lacking enough players for the game — as well as the possibility of Thursday night rain.
Coach Dave Oliver said the Okmulgee game will try to be rescheduled for July 10, but no date has been set as of this time.
