WISTER — The bad news was the Wister Wildcats OK Kids prep baseball team lost a heartbreaking regional title game Friday night to the Stilwell Angels. The good news is the Wildcats are still state bound.
After the Angels scored twice in their the sixth inning to force extra innings, they scored once in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 victory in the 2012 OK Kids Regional Tournament at the Wister High School baseball field. The Angels (champions) and the Wildcats (runners-up) will both be at the 2012 OK Kids Preps State Tournament, which will begin today in Chandler.
After the Poteau Pirates lost 4-3 to the Texoma Lookouts in the first game of last week's OK Kids Midgets Regional Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Area, they knew their backs were against the wall, needing to end the event 5-0 to advance to this week's Midgets State Tournament in Elk City. They did just that.
The good news is that LeFlore County will have two teams trying to vie for the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee State Tournament title. The bad news is they begin today's state tournament by meeting each other.
The Poteau Buccaneers and the Poteau Rebels each won their respective regional tournaments on Saturday to advance to state.
The Buccaneers defeated the Whitesboro Bulldogs 10-1 in Saturday's title game. The Bulldogs got to the title game by beating the tournament-host Roland Cardinals 14-6 in Friday night's loser's-bracket final.
HEAVENER — It seems appropriate that with all the rain showers LeFlore County experienced this past weekend that a team called the Thunder enjoyed a banner run at the 2012 OK Kids Coach-Pitch Regional Tournament at Blues Park.
The Heavener Thunder went through undefeated to win the regional tournament as they routed the Stilwell Warriors 17-4 in four innings in Sunday afternoon's title game. The game was to have been played on Saturday, but the game was rained out and rescheduled for Sunday afternoon.
PANAMA — The Poteau Outlaws OK Kids Midgets baseball team got to the title game of the 2012 Regional Tournament Saturday afternoon at Willie Darneal Field, but the bad news was they ran into the Stilwell Indians.
The Indians pulled away late to down the Outlaws 10-0 in five innings to win the title, and make this week's state tournament in Elk City.
The Outlaws reached the title game with a 6-1 win over the Asher Indians, then outlasted the host Panama Boomers 15-13 on Friday.
PRESTON — The season came to an end for the Spiro Reds in the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee Regional Tournament as they lost a slugfest to Sallisaw by a score of 23-20 in Friday night's loser's-bracket semifinal.
The Reds ended the season at 42-15.
The game was tied at 18-18 after three innings, but Sallisaw broke the tie with a two-run fourth inning to take a 20-18 lead. The Reds were never able to get the lead after that.
