The residents of the 700 block of Grace Street were alerted to a shed fire that quickly turned worse Wednesday afternoon.
The blaze is under investigation but neighbors claim they heard an explosion followed by flames. The fire began in a shed in the back yard of a residence, spread to the home then to a neighboring home on the north side. Two other homes were endangered by the flames and homeowners spent the afternoon watering down their roofs in hopes of saving their homes.
The bridge on the Poteau River west of Pocola on U.S. Hwy. 271 was dedicated and named after U.S. Army Sgt. Vincent L.C. Owens Wednesday afternoon.
In attendance at the ceremony were Owens’ family and friends as well as state sen. Mark Allen and state rep. James Lockhart. The LeFlore County Disabled American Veteran provided color guard for the ceremony.
Owens was killed in action during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan near Forward Operating Base Sharana when his transport vehicle was attacked on March 1. He was 21 years of age at the time of his death.
