Not even a rain shower on Thursday could keep the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team from winning another district championship.
After having Game 1 of the Class 4A District Tournament suspended by Thursday afternoon's rain showers, the contest resumed Friday afternoon. The Lady Pirates ended up not only getting one run-rule win, but two. Poteau took the opener 10-0 in four innings, followed by a 12-0 three-inning victory in Game 2 to win the district title.
The Lady Pirates (29-7) will find out on Monday who, where and when they will play in the Class 4A Regional Tournament.

Lo and behold, a senior stepped up to make sure the streak stayed alive.

The Poteau Pirates football team went toe to toe with Class 4A's sixth-ranked Sallisaw Black Diamonds last week in the District 4A-4 opener at Costner Stadium, but eventually fell 31-21.
âWe played well, and we played hard,â said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. âWe didn't give up. It just came down to a few plays where we didn't make them and they did. That's just football, but we played very hard. There were a lot of good things (about the Sallisaw game).â
The District 3A-8 season got off on the wrong foot for the Spiro Bulldogs football team last week, but the âDogs just happened to play a team that is thought to be the favorite to win the district title â the Stigler Panthers. The Panthers proved that point to the Bulldogs in a 48-16 win.
