Poteau Pirates making strides despite loss to Sallisaw Friday night

September 25, 2012

Well, the Poteau Pirates played with Class 4A's sixth-ranked Sallisaw Black Diamonds in Friday night's District 4A-4 opener at Costner Stadium, and were in contention until the final quarter. It seemed like the Black Diamonds came out in the third quarter and made major corrections on the offensive side of the ball. Ben Oberste, the future Tulsa Golden Hurricane, has been highly visible in sports in eastern Oklahoma for the past three years. But without question, he was a lot more dominating with his legs than with his arm. Poteau had no answer for the QB read option.

Just a handful of diamond teams left now

September 25, 2012

At this time last week, LeFlore County had 12 high school fast-pitch softball teams and five high school fall baseball teams still playing on the diamond.
However, those numbers were severely cut last week in district tournaments. Now, there are five softball and a single baseball team still playing.
The Poteau Lady Pirates will begin postseason play Thursday in the Class 4A District Tournament, while the other teams will be in regional tournament with the hopes of making it to next weekend's state tournaments.

Whitesboro girls run into hot-hitting Eagletown in Class B District Tournament as fast-pitch season comes to an end

September 25, 2012

BATTIEST — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs softball team had the misfortune of hitting a hot-hitting Eagletown Lady Eagles team in Thursday's Class B District Tournament. The end result was a pair of losses to the Lady Eagles by scores of 11-0 and 17-7 to see their season come to an end. Whitesboro won its first game, as the Lady Bulldogs doubled up the host Lady Panthers 12-6.

Disappointing end to fall baseball season for Whitesboro boys

September 25, 2012

BATTIEST — As strong a beginning to the Class B District Tournament was for the Whitesboro Bulldogs baseball team, the end was just as disappointing.
Only needing a single win on Friday to advance to next week's Class B Regional Tournament, the ’Dogs were beaten twice by the Caney Cougars by scores of 17-0 in four innings in the first title game and 7-6 in the second title game to see their season end.
The Bulldogs won their first two games on Thursday, handling host Battiest 13-2, then outlasting Caney 10-9.

Not even Wilson's return could help Arkansas in loss to Rutgers

September 25, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The stage was set for Arkansas starting quarterback Tyler Wilson and the Hogs to stop a two game-losing streak, and maybe save what's left of their season Saturday night at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
The Razorbacks had the opportunity to come back from a 14-10 halftime deficit, after squandering a 10-0 first quarter lead, but the Hogs let too many scoring chances go by the board and fell to gunslinging Gary Nova and the Knights 35-26.

Tulsa football team struggles early, but ends up winning for third straight time

September 25, 2012

TULSA — For most of the first half — even into the third quarter — of Saturday night's game between the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium, it didn't look to good for the home team.
Tulsa quarterback Cody Green had two interceptions returned for touchdowns by the Bulldogs, who led 20-7 after one quarter and had a 26-17 advantage after the second pick-six with 12:33 left in the third quarter.
However, the mark of a good team is to find ways to win, and the Golden Hurricane did just that as they ended up with a 27-26 victory.
