CAMERON — The Panama High School basketball teams entered this week's inaugural Green Valley Conference Tournament on a high note Friday night as they swept the Cameron teams at the Cameron Gym.
The Razorbacks handled the Yellowjackets 71-53 right after the Lady ’Backs knocked off the Lady ’Jackets 46-32.
GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Spiro Bulldogs basketball team took advantage of the fact that the Hillbillies from Ozark, Ark., did not have their complete team when it came to Friday afternoon's game in the H.B. Stewart Classic, since the Hillbillies played for a state football title on Saturday.
The Bulldogs proved too much for the depleted Hillbillies to post a 67-41 victory.
However, the Lady Hillbillies were able to get a win for Ozark, which downed the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 57-40.
Walter Joe Cheely, 85, of Chino, Calif., died Nov. 12, 2012, in Chino.
Walter was born Oct. 5, 1927, in Shady Point to James and Maybelle (Foote) Cheely. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Navy in Italy and Guam. He was a 1946 graduate of Poteau High School. He got his BA at Northeastern and later obtained his master’s degree. Walter taught school for two years at Fox, 10 years at Derby, Kan., and 30 years in California. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Charlene Stanley.
Reba Ruby Mairel Shupert, 95, of Cameron died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, in Poteau. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Dowden Funeral Home Chapel, Heavener, with burial in Conser Cemetery.
Bessie Thurman, 92, of Howe died Saturday, Dec. 8, in Pocola. Services will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Springhill Baptist Church in Howe with burial in Summerfield Cemetery. Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener, is handling arrangements.
Lesta Juanita Johnston, 95, of Poteau died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Poteau. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener.
J.T. Smith, 83, of Poteau died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Poteau. J.T. was born in Sugar Loaf on Jan. 31, 1929, to Finis and Hestor (McMillian) Smith. J.T. was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was a truck driver. J.T. was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thurell Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Nina of the home; stepson, John Terry of Mojave, Calif.; three step-grandchildren, Rhonda Terry, Jenna Terry and Justin Terry; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.
Velta Ruth Pipkins, 78, of Pocola died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Velta was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Mulberry, Ark., to Clyde and Letha (Jordan) Drummond. She was a furniture refurbisher for many years and then worked for Welker Machine Shop. Velta was preceded in death by her father; daughter, Linda Partlow Wilkins; and great-grandson, Noah Holsted.
