'Mud Ducks' coming to town; sixth annual Mark Sullivan Junior Golf Camp Tuesday through Thursday at Choctaw Country Club

There are some “Mud Ducks” on the horizon. The sixth annual Mark “Mud Duck” Sullivan Junior Golf Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Wednesday, while the final day of camp will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Choctaw Country Club. The camp is open to boys and girls of all ages. Entry fee is $20 per camper.
Instructors will be Poteau golf coaches Mike Thomas and Randall Wheat, along with Andy Perdue and the high school golf teams.

Poteau wrestling coach named Region 6 Coach of the Year

For Poteau Pirates Wrestling Coach Chris Barbee, it's not about awards, it's about the athletes. However, for one moment, it is about him.
Barbee, who completed his second season with the Pirates, was named the Region 6 Wrestling Coach of the Year.
“It was very humbling,” Barbee said. “It was really kind of unexpected. Like I tell people, I didn't get into coaching to win awards. I got into coaching because I love the sport and I love to teach it to young kids. I was just fortunate enough to win the award, and I'm very humble.”

Locust Grove assistant coach takes over Heavener football

HEAVENER — Sometimes there are things which catch the human eyes that cannot be forgotten. That seems to be the case with Heavener High School's new football coach.
When Locust Grove Offensive Coordinator Carl Lee saw the Heavener Wolves a couple summers ago, he thought they could be a good football team. Now, he'll get the chance to witness that up close and personal.
Lee was hired as the new Wolves' football coach, replacing John Thompson who stepped down after last season's playoff campaign.

Talihina boys coach leaving for Stuart; Assistant girls coach, softball coach stepping in

After one year as coach of the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team, Coach Darrick Farriell is moving on.
Farriell will become the new coach of the Stuart Hornets.
“It was a job I had my eye on for a while,” Farriell said. “It's a basketball-baseball school. You get to start playing a month early, and have that much more practice time — unlike a football school. It's a small school. The kids work hard there, and that was something that made me excited.”

Cameron baseball player wins SE HR Derby, while Talihina player runner-up — both make State HR Derby next week in McAlester; Blue team defeats White; each team has local players

McALESTER — Cameron's Austin Standridge won Wednesday night's Southeast Coaches All-Star Game Home Run Derby Wednesday night at Mike Deak Field. He hit five home runs total, four of which came in the second round.
Talihina's Austin Lawson was runner-up with two homers — one in each round. Both players will return next week to compete in the State Coaches Home Run Derby.
As for the game, the Blue, which featured Standridge, Lawson, Cameron's Dale Pearson and Talihina's Zach Curran, defeated the White 9-4.

Jackie Wayne Dinger

Jackie Wayne Dinger, 70, of De Queen, Ark., died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at his home.
He was born Dec. 11, 1941, in De Queen. He was retired from the U.S. Army.
 Dinger was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Eula Smith Dinger; two brothers, Frank Dinger and Bobby Dinger; and two sisters, Peggy Deer and Evelyn Hill.

William “Billy” Ray McClary

William “Billy” Ray McClary, 53, of Panama died Wednesday, May 16, 2012, in Tulsa.
Billy was born Nov. 21, 1958, in Altus to William Paul and Myrna Joyce Sutton McClary.
Billy was a member of the First Step of Faith Church in Poteau. He loved old cars and motorcycles.
He is survived by his wife, Joy of the home; mother, Myrna Joyce (McClary) Kinney of Panama; an aunt, Delores “Dody” Stewart of Panama; several cousins and many friends
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Mallory-Martin Chapel of Spiro with Rev. Leon Glenn officiating.

Lula Mae Myers

Lula Mae Myers, 94, of Poteau died Friday, May 18, 2012, in Poteau.
Lula ws born July 31, 1917, to Clarence and Nellie (Pate) Shrum in Hartford, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Myers; son, Jackie Neal Myers; and grandson, Ricky Neal Myers; her parents,  three brothers and one sister. 
Lula was an elementary teacher for 30 years, pianist, teacher and Vacation Bible School Director at church, a member of the Poteau Church of the Nazarene. She was an active participant of Compassionate Ministries through music at the Oaks Healthcare Center. 

Shane Derrick “Doc” Owens

Shane Derrick “Doc” Owens, 30, formerly of Shady Point died Thursday, May 10, 2012, in Orlando, Fla.
Shane was born Dec. 3, 1981, in Hyden, Ky. 
He was a paramedic in Orlando, an Iraq war veteran and a medic in the U.S. Army Reserves.
