WILBURTON — On Feb. 25 at Ada High School's Cougar Activity Center, the then-undefeated Amber-Pocasset Lady Panthers beat the Howe Lady Lions 40-29 in the Class 2A Regional Tournament title game.
Just one week later, the same two teams met, this time at the new Wilburton High School Gym, and for the Class 2A Area Tournament consolation championship.
The good news for the Lady Lions was the second meeting was closer than the game one week prior, but the not-so-good news was the outcome proved to be the same.
LeFlore County high school basketball came to an end on Saturday, but not the way everyone had hoped.
For starters, the Howe Lady Lions missed out on a trip to state when they lost 39-30 to the Amber-Pocasset Lady Panthers in the Class 2A Area Tournament Saturday night at the new Wilburton High School Gym.
But that pales to the sorrowful news which happened earlier that day near Big Cedar. First-year Whitesboro Boys Coach Wayne Tucker was killed in a single-car accident on Oklahoma State Highway 63 between Muse and Big Cedar.
MENA, Ark. — The Poteau High School soccer seasons got underway Friday night with a split as the Pirates beat the host Mena Bearcats 5-0 behind Blake Williams' hat trick, but the Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Bearcarts by an identical 5-0 score.
WILBURTON — The 2012 slow-pitch softball season got started in fine fashion for the Wister Lady Wildcats as they went 3-0 in the Wilburton Festival.
Wister beat Hugo 8-7, defeated Porum 7-4 and handled Vanoss 12-1.
In the victory over Hugo, the Lady ’Cats rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the opening inning with a single run in the first inning and three runs in the second inning for a 5-3 lead.
After the Lady Buffaloes scored once in the third inning to cut the deficit to 5-4, they regained the lead with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead.
WILBURTON — The Talihina Golden Tigers opened their season Saturday afternoon with a 14-1, five-inning, run-rule victory over the Wilburton Diggers.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Golden Tigers broke the tie with a four-run third inning and a nine-run fourth inning.
Austin Lawson got the win, pitching a one-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Wilburton 8, Cameron 7: Friday afternoon in Wilburton, the Yellowjackets suffered their first loss of the season as the Diggers scored two runs in the home half of the seventh inning to get the win.
TONKAWA — The Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks took a pair of softball games from the Carl Albert State College LadyVikings Saturday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 3-2 in an eight-inning contest.
The Lady Vikings will have back-to-back doubleheaders this week. This afternoon, they will entertain Rose State College in a 2 p.m. twinbill, then will welcome Western Oklahoma State College to town for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
While we had a few baseball and softball teams open their seasons late last week, the rest of those teams who haven't yet will do so this week.
The schedule is listed below.
The Wister Wildcats, beginning the defnse of their Class 2A state championship, will face the Elgin Owls at 7 p.m. Friday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
