Stars of the Month named at Shooting Stars Gymnastics Center at Poteau Spirit Center for January

Shooting Stars Gymnastics Center at Poteau Spirit Center named its January Stars of the Month earlier this week.
Grace Hall was named the Tumbler Star of the Month because of her consistency to show up to class and her dedication to try new skills.
Savannah Goolsby. who recently joined the competitive gymnastics team, is the Team Star of the Month because she has determination to learn new skills and has been working very hard in class.
Jalee McKenzie is the Gymastics Class Stars due to her enthusiasm in class and her awesome improvements.

Super Bowl XLVI Weekend is finally here — as is the annual He-Man Punt, Pass and Kick Competitions

This is my busiest weekend of the year — Super Bowl Weekend!
The 2012 sixth annual Junior He-Man Punt, Pass and Kick Competition will take place beginning at high noon Saturday at the “Jody Ray Sports Complex,” located at 306 Strip Pit Road. There are two divisions, the L'il He-Man Division for ages 6 to 8 and Junior He-Man Division for ages 9 to 12.

Ann “Cookie” Dunfee, 72, of Shady Point died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in Shady Point Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Teresa Mae Byington

Teresa Mae Byington, 61, of Talihina died Wednesday, Feb 1, 2012, in Antlers. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Talihina Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at the New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Spiro trio sign football letters of intent on National Signing Day; Booze signs with Dartmouth, while Hawkins, Scott ink with Langston

SPIRO — If you're a football player, the first Wednesday in February is one of your favorite days — National Letter of Intent Signing Day. For three Spiro Bulldogs, that dream became reality.
Spiro's K.J. Booze, Tyh Hawkins and Jordan Scott signed letters of intent Wednesday morning at the Spiro Gym.
Booze signed with Dartmouth College of the Ivy League in Hanover, N.H. However, official acceptance into the famed collegiate institution does become official for any Ivy League school until April. But football players can still sign their letters of intent in February.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is March 30. For additional information or to submit a nomination, call (918) 839-0394.

Fort Gibson wrestlers spoil homecoming, Senior Night for Poteau Pirates

It was two for the price of one for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. It was both homecoming and Senior Night as the Pirates entertained the Fort Gibson Tigers in their last dual of the season.
Things did not end so well for the Pirates as the Tigers left town 39-27 victors.
With the dual tied at 15-15, the Tigers (5-4) won matches at 145 and 152 pounds to take a 24-15 lead.
Derek Francis got the Pirates (15-7) right back into the dual with a pin at the 1:41 mark of the opening period in his 160-pound match to cut Fort Gibson's lead to 24-21.

Roland teams sweep pair from Poteau Tuesday night

ROLAND — It was a rough night of basketball for the Poteau High School teams Tuesday night as they each suffered losses. The undefeated Roland Rangers handled the Pirates 65-35, while the Lady Rangers got past the Lady Pirates 60-46.

WISTER — A strong third quarter enabled the Bokoshe Lady Tigers to post a 58-50 come-from-behind win over the Wister Lady Wildcats Tuesday night at the Wister Gym.
Down 25-23 at halftime, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady ’Cats 27-7 in the third quarter to take a 50-32 lead into the final period.
One thing which aided the Bokoshe comeback was the 3-point baskets, of which the Lady Tigers hit 11 for 33 of their 58 points.
