HOWE — It took an extra three minutes to decide the victor between the Leflore Lady Savages and the Pocola Lady Indians in Wednesday's consolation quarterfinal contest in the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament.
After Pocola's Lupe Galvan hit a lay-up with about 30 seconds left to tie the game at 21-all to force overtime, the Lady Savages were able to outlast the Lady Indians 27-24 to reach Thursday's consolation semifinals.
The other girls consolation quarterfinal was just as close, and decided by the same score, as the Bokoshe Lady Tigers edged the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 27-24.
MONROE — All that matters is leading at the end of the game — just ask the Arkoma Mustangs.
Tanner Sanders' basket with 4.3 seconds left in regulation lifted the Mustangs to a 46-45 win over the Hodgen Bulldogs in consolation quarterfinal action in the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament on Wednesday night at the Monroe gym.
Three other teams made it to the consolation semifinals. Arkoma's boys faced Whitesboro in one consolation semifinals on Thursday as the Bulldogs defeated the Cameron Yellowjackets 54-35.
LONE GROVE — It was a rough start to the 2013 Lone Grove Invitational for the Talihina High School basketball teams on Thursday at the Gary Scott Center.
The Lady Golden Tigers lost 49-45 to the Marlow Lady Outlaws, while the Golden Tigers fell 60-54 to the Walters Blue Devils.
Both Talihina teams will be in the consolation semifinals today. The Lady Golden Tigers will play the Comanche Lady Indians at 10 a.m. Friday with the winner playing for the consolation championship at 1 p.m. Saturday. The loser will play for seventh place at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Poteau Youth Wrestling Club had 10 members participate in the USJOC Tournament last weekend in Oklahoma City.
Three of those 10 wrestlers placed as Ethan Carey was runner-up and James Moss was fifth in the novice portion of the tournament, while Jarrett Lilley was sixth in the open division.
Other wrestlers who competed but did not place were Talan Fairless, Drew Moro, Remington Reed, Hayden Moro, Luke Brooks, Race Williams, Mason Francis and Jarrod Vineyard.
Brooks, while he did not medal, did receive the Academic All-State and Governor’s Awards.
The third annual He-Man Women Haters Club’s Polar Bear Tournament took place Saturday at Grasshopper Landing on Broken Bow Lake.
Jason Wickware and Chad Warner claimed the top prize with 18.48 pounds of fish to earn $180.
An Idabel duo came in second — Brandon Scarborough and Brian Robinette — with a stringer weighing 16.52 pounds.
Mike Scarborough and John Jobe were third (12.71 pounds), followed by Mike Sockey, Ed Sockey, Jeff Roberts and yours truly in fourth (11.72) and Andy Nance and Judd Wann were fifth (11.23).
This is LeFlore County Junior High Tournament week, and the Wister boys and girls are having a good week so far. Both teams are in the semifinals Friday night and both will be playing Spiro. If you get a chance come on out and watch these kids play.
