Poteau runner wins regional title; Lady Pirate duo regional medalists; Lady Pirates team, Pirate runner qualify for next weekend's Class 4A State Meet

TULSA — The name's Bond ... Deven Bond.
Bond, one of four Poteau Lady Pirate cross country runners, won the Class 4A Regional Meet on Saturday afternoon at Oral Roberts University. She ran the two-mile course in 13:11.63.
The Lady Pirates had two regional medalists as fellow senior Haley Griggs was eighth (13:33.76).
The good news was the entire Poteau girls team made state as they finished fourth with 118 points, finishing behind regional champion Oklahoma City Heritage Hall (53 points), Tulsa Metro Christian (72) and Vinita (104).

OU makes plays to beat Texas Tech for a very happy homecoming

NORMAN — The Oklahoma Sooners football team did what it had to do to make it a happy homecoming in this past weekend's home game against Texas Tech on a rainy, damp Saturday at Owen Field.
The Sooners had to come back twice, including withstanding a 17-point barrage by the Red Raiders in about a 5:30 span of the third quarter, to down the Red Raiders 38-30.

HUGS program continues to grow

Wister High School 4-H member Adrianna Curnutt and National Honor Society classmate Colton Lynn spread out the many items they were able to purchase as part of this years HUGS (Hats, Underwear, Gloves and Socks) program. The program is co-sponsored by the LeFlore County Health Department and the clothing give-away was in conjunction with flu immunization day for small children. According to Curnutt, 1,902 items were given away Friday to area children.

It was a sad weekend the weekend before last for those who remember legendary Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints coach Bum Phillips, who died at age 90.
Before I go on, for those who aren't aware, the Houston Oilers are known today as the Tennessee Titans when owner Bud Adams moved the franchise from Houston to Nashville, Tenn.
The Oilers may have had one of the greatest fight songs ever. It started out, “Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers No. 1.” The crowd at the Astrodome would go nuts waving their blue pom-poms and blue signs that said “Love Ya, Blue!”

PKMS teams end seasons with losses to McAlester

McALESTER — The seasons ended on a down note for the Pansy Kidd Middle School football teams Thursday night at Hook-Eales Stadium, both losing to host McAlester.
The eighth-grade Raiders lost 30-6 right after the seventh-graders fell 14-8.

Lady Vikings have second annual Special Olympics Basketball Clinic

Carl Albert State College women's basketball coach Jeff Tadtman and assistant coach Rikki Wolfe had their second annual basketball clinic for the Special Olympic Athletes of LeFlore County last Monday afternoon at the Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A total of 17 Special Olympic Athletes attended the clinic, of which some attended last year.

Stigler too much for Heavener

HEAVENER — In a battle of cats and dogs, the cats got the better of things in Friday nights District 3A-8 contest at Harvey Stadium.
The visiting Stigler Panthers completely dominated the Heavener Wolves, winning 61-7.
The Panthers scored on all eight first-half possessions en route to a 54-0 halftime lead.

No. 7 Arkoma falls to No. 4 Thackerville

THACKERVILLE — In a battle of top 10 teams in Class C, the fourth-ranked and homestanding Thackerville Wildcats knocked off No. 7 Arkoma 66-22 on Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.
The Mustangs (4-3 overall, 4-2 in District C-4 play) were down only 26-22 at halftime, but were outscored by the undefeated Wildcats (7-0, 5-0) 40-0 in the second half.

Antlers strikes late to down Pocola

ANTLERS — Pocola lost a heartbreaker here Friday, leading until the final six seconds of the game before Antlers wrangled a touchdown and a two-point conversion to avoid overtime and win 42-34 in a District 2A-6 contest.
The Indians (2-6 overall, 1-4 in district play) led 14-8 after the first quarter, 28-16 at the half and 34-28 going into the final quarter.
