Kiwanis Club names new officers

NEW OFFICERS — The Poteau Kiwanis Club had its installation of officers for the new year Thursday night at Warehouse Willy's. Youthful cancer survivor recipient of scholarship

ST. LOUIS — Cassie Bess of Heavener is one of 38 students from across the United States to be awarded a college scholarship from The National Children’s Cancer Society’s Beyond the Cure program. Bess is a junior at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. 
The Beyond the Cure scholarship program was created to aid young survivors as they move forward with their lives after cancer. This support helps young adults achieve their educational, professional and personal goals.

Pocola, Colbert girls in driver's seat at Class 2A Regional Tournament

WISTER — In last month's LeFlore County Tournament, the Pocola Lady Indians suffered a 6-0 loss to the Panama Razorbacks. Thursday afternoon in the Class 2A Regional Tournament, it was a different story.
The Lady Indians prevailed over the archrival Lady ’Backs by a score of 5-1 in the second opening-round game of the regional.
In the first game of the day, the host Wister Lady Wildcats suffered a 1-0 loss to the Colbert Lady Leopards.
At press time, Panama (21-14) faced Wister (17-8) in an elimination game, followed by the winner's-bracket final between Pocola (19-9) and Colbert (22-8).

Wister boys on cusp of returning to state, upset No. 1 Byng Pirates

BYNG — Last spring, the Wister Wildcats baseball team saw its streak of making the state tournament come to an end. The ‘Cats are on the verge of starting a new streak.
The Wildcats upset Class A's top-ranked Byng Pirates on their home field to open play in the Class A Regional Tournament at Stokes Field.
The Wildcats (18-13) played the Latta Panthers later Thursday, with the winner advancing to next week's Class A State Tournament.

Heavener girls win regional opener over Morris

OKTAHA — The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team won its Class 3A Regional Tournament opener 8-2 over the Morris Lady Eagles on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Wolves (29-9) were playing regional host Oktaha later on Thursday with the winner advancing to today's regional final at 2 this afternoon with a win qualifying them for next week's Class 3A State Tournament. The loser will play Stigler in the loser's-bracket final at noon today, and that winner must win must beat Oktaha twice today to make state.

Howe girls lose regional opener to host Wright City; Lady Lions faced elimination Thursday afternoon, today

WRIGHT CITY — The Howe Lady Lions softball team found itself in the same position as a week ago, trying to stave off elimination.
The Lady Lions, who had to beat Arkoma twice last week to win the district title, lost their Class A Regional Tournament opener 7-0 to the host Wright City Lady Lumberjax on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Lions (16-13) played Porum later Thursday, with that winner having to win three times today to make state.

Leflore boys lose to host Red Oak in Class B Regional Tournament; Savages can still make state with two wins today

RED OAK — The Leflore Savages baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss to the Red Oak Eagles in the opening round of the Class B Regional Tournament on Thursday.
The Savages (18-11) can still make it to state as the consolation champion by winning twice today. Leflore will play the loser of Thursday's Boswell-Caney game at noon today, with that winner playing the loser of Thursday's regional championship game at 2 p.m. for the consolation championship, and a berth in next week's Class B State Tournament.

Poteau Pirates welcome Stilwell for homecoming

While the Poteau Pirates will hope for a happy homecoming tonight when they entertain the Stilwell Indians at 7:30 p.m. at Costner Stadium, last week was a pretty happy one, too, for the locals after the Pirates ended a six-game losing streak to the archrival Sallisaw Black Diamonds in a 34-9 victory.
“It was a good win for us,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “It was a good win for our program. It was a good win for the town. Hopefully, that can propel us to bigger and better things. It was a big deal for us to win.”

Bokoshe Tigers seek first win tonight, entertain Midway Chargers

Bokoshe Tigers football coach Bryan Murray has said if his team can ever be at full strength that there were some upcoming games in which he liked his team's chances.
The first of those games could very well be tonight when the Tigers entertain the Midway Chargers at 7:30 p.m. in a District C-4 contest.

Heavener finally gets a home game, welcomes Roland to town

For the first time since the tailgate party that took place on the first day of football practice in August, the Heavener Wolves will finally get to play a game at Harvey Stadium, which they will do at 7:30 tonight in their District 3A-8 contest against the Roland Rangers.
The game was to have been their homecoming game, but it has been changed to Oct. 17 when the Wolves entertain the Spiro Bulldogs.
