Poteau Pirates bounce back in big way, rout Muldrow

October 26, 2013

MULDROW — The Poteau Pirates returned to their winning ways after they had a major hiccup last week against Tulsa Cascia Hall. The Pirates were focused and in a groove as they struck early and often. Senior quarterback Jace Pitchford threw three touchdown passes, had a kick return for another score and a 64-yard dash as the Pirates routed the Muldrow Bulldogs 42-3 on Friday night.

Poteau Pirate senior cross country runners anxious to run again, make state; Pirates, Lady Pirates participating at Class 4A Regional Meet this afternoon at ORU

October 26, 2013

The Poteau High School cross country runners, other than those who participated in Thursday's Vike@Nite at Carl Albert State College, have been idle of competition for almost a month. They haven't ran since the Oct. 10 Claremore Invitational. The Chili Pepper Invitational was rained out on Oct. 5 at Fayetteville, Ark.
So, needless to say the runners are chomping at the bit to get back on the course once more. That chance will happen at 1 this afternoon at the Class 4A Regional Meet at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa.

Heavener Wolves in playoff mode tonight against Stigler

October 25, 2013

Although the high school football playoffs don't begin until Nov. 15, they might as well begin tonight for the Heavener Wovles.
The Wolves (2-4 overall, 1-3 in District 3A-8 play) are in a must-win situation tonight when they entertain the Stigler Panthers (5-2, 3-1) at 7:30 p.m. at Harvey Stadium. If the Wolves want to keep their playoff hopes alive, a win tonight is needed.

Pocola needs a win tonight as Indians travel to Antlers

October 25, 2013

Their backs aren't against the wall, but the Pocola Indians football team is sure in its shadows.
The Indians (2-5, 1-3 in District 2A-6) are almost in a must-win situation tonight when they hit the road to face the Antlers Bearcats (3-4, 1-3) at 7:30 p.m.
“It's a must win for us,” Pocola coach Rick Lang said. “We're technically not out of it if we lose, but if we win we still control our own destiny to make the playoffs. If we lose, things are out of our control. We want to end on a good note. We want to go 5-5 and go to the playoffs. That's what they're shooting for.”

It was a busy weekend for me

October 25, 2013

On Oct. 17, the Adams family went to the Poteau Pirates' home District 4A-4 football game at Costner Stadium against the Tulsa Cascia Hall Commandos — and that was just the start of my busy weekend.
Last Friday morning, I'm up by 5 a.m., hauling dirt bikes and 50 pounds of Okie burgers to Balloon Fest at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds.

Poteau looks to redeem itself Friday night against Muldrow

October 24, 2013

For the first time this season, the Poteau Pirates football team will have to overcome the toughest adversity it's faced this season — a loss the week before.
The Pirates (6-1 overall, 3-1 in District 4A-4) will look to redeem themselves after last week's home loss to Tulsa Cascia Hall as they will travel to meet the Muldrow Bulldogs (2-5, 2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Local golfer to play for Oklahoma team this weekend

October 24, 2013

Two-time Class 4A state golf champion Hannah Ward will play with the Oklahoma team in this weekend's Red River Team Challenge at Ardmore's Dornick Hills Country Club.
Ward and her Oklahoma teammates will face a team from Texas and Mexico.
The Poteau Lady Pirate senior golfer was fifth in the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tournament that took place earlier this month at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City, shooting a 77-71—148.

Battle of Bulldogs Friday night for Spiro at Valliant

October 24, 2013

One thing will be for sure at the end of Friday night — the Bulldogs will win. The only question will be is the winning team from Spiro or Valliant.
Spiro (6-1 overall, 4-0 in District 3A-8 play) will visit Valliant (2-5, 2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a battle of Bulldogs.
Spiro is on a six-game winning streak since losing its season opener 32-14 to Vian. The local Bulldogs are entering coming off a 35-7 win over Heavener on Oct. 17 at Harvey Stadium. However, in Spiro coach Chris Bunch's opinion, it took a strong second half to pull away from the pesky Wolves.
