Dual-wheeled duo makes debut

The Poteau Police Department recently announced the formation of a mountain bike patrol unit to be used during events and other crowded happenings. During the Balloon Fest, the dual-wheeled duo of Brandon Richie and Billy Hooper helped with crowd and traffic control during the units first official day of action.

Mud pits a big hit at festival

A large crowd lined the sides of the mud pits Saturday during the mud races. The mud races were one of many entertainment events held during the weekend.

Two injured in Friday rollover accident

A 25-year-old man and an 16-month-old child were injured Friday afternoon in a roll-over accident on U.S. Highway 271 about one mile east of the north Pocola Boulevard intersection. LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services took the injured man to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., and the child was flown by a Life Flight medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital. Pocola police investigated the accident. Pocola fire and rescue responded to the accident.

Heavener cross country runners seek state berths Saturday afternoon; Lady Wolves, Wolves will run at Class 3A Regional Meet in Henryetta

The most important race for the Heavener High School cross country teams will be Saturday.
The Lady Wolves and Wolves will run in the Class 3A Regional Meet, which will begin at noon Saturday at Henryetta.
The top seven teams automatically qualify all team members to next weekend's Class 3A State Meet at Shawnee's Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
After that, the next top seven individuals not on one of the seven state-qualifying teams will earn at-large bids to state.

Lady Vikings announce last wave of signees; among them is a former Heavener Lady Wolf

Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings basketball coach Jeff Tadtman would like to announce the commitments of Kamber Vasquez along with Courtney Flemming, Breonna Johnson and Tazzie Shaw to play basketball for the Lady Vikings for the 2013-14 season.
Vasquez is a 5-8 freshman shooting guard from Heavener. To be able to continue playing basketball was important to Vasquez.

Buccaneer Basketball registration has begun. Registration forms can be picked up at Poteau City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Cost to register is $25 per player and deadline to enter is Friday.
Anyone interested in coaching a team needs to contact Billy Bond at (918) 647-1939.
The draft will be Wednesday.

The 2013 Eagle Crest 4-Ball Golf Tournament will be Saturday and Sunday at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Fort Smith, Ark.
Tee-time Saturday will be 8 a.m. Entry fee is $450 per two-man team.
Proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Alma (Ark.) Area.

Escaped inmate captured

An escaped prisoner from Jim E. Hamilton Community Correction Center led law enforcement on a 9-hour manhunt Friday until he was captured.
According to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department, Mark Shane Bennett, 41, escaped from the Jim E. Hamilton Community Correction Center in Hodgen Friday morning. He was discovered missing at the 8 a.m. head count according to officials.
A search was conducted by members of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Unit, JEHCC CERT team, LeFlore County Sheriff's Department and other area law enforcement agencies.

Two people injured in rollover accident

A 25-year-old man and 18-month-old child were both injured Friday at about 1:15 p.m. in a rollover accident on U.S. Highway 271 in Pocola. The child was flown by a Life Flight medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital and the man was taken to a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services, according to emergency responders. Pocola Police Department is investigating the accident.

It's fall break — meaning playoff picture is taking shape

We're enjoying fall break, and it's going to feel good to not have a late night tonight for once — especially since fellow photojournalist Craig Hall and I are leaving at 6 a.m. Saturday for the Texas Christian-Oklahoma State football game, which will kick off at 11 a.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. I can get my beauty sleep tonight!
However, fall break also normally means something else to me as far as being a sports writer is concerned. It normally means that the playoff picture is starting to take shape.

Local owner to have horse try to repeat at champion

OKLAHOMA CITY — The $175,000 Classics Cup is the richest event on the Classics program tonight at Remington Park.
A field of eight, with seven wagering interests, drew into the race with defending champion Fifth Date involved.
Fifth Date, winner of the 2012 Cup, has returned to sprinting most recently this year, winning just one of nine attempts to this point in 2013. Victorious in 11 of 40 career attempts at Remington Park, Fifth Date has won 18 races from 71 lifetime starts with overall earnings of $498,225.
