This yearâ€™s Vike @ Nite 5K awarded prizes in several categories of competition in addition to who crossed the finish line in the top spots as previously announced.
The Most Creative Costume awards went to Traci Barnes, Susan Manlove, Cathleen Manlove and Sam Kiger. This group won Mazzioâ€™s gift certificates.
The Largest Corporate Team was represented by Southern Star and they won a traveling Viking helmet trophy.
Four Poteau Lady Pirate cross country runners â€” Kaitlan Standridge, Brittany Fox, Deven Bond and Haley Griggs â€” hope to end their high school careers in the best way possible, winning state.
The senior foursome, along with Sheridan Hoyer, Kayle Dryer and Bailee Bates â€” as well as Pirate senior Dylan Fox â€” will run at the Class 4A State Meet, which will begin at noon Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School, located at 1901 West 15th Street.
The Carl Albert State College Vikings will open their 2013-14 basketball season at 11 a.m. Saturday against Howard, Texas, and face South Plains, Texas, at 11 a.m. Sunday. Both games will be a part of the Midwest Scouting Service Challenge in Dallas.
The Vikings non-conferenceÂ schedule will be tough as usual again this season.
â€śHoward and Coffeyville [Kan.] both made the national tournament last year,â€ť CASC men's coach Mike St. John said. â€śWe are playing three of the six teams in arguably the best region in the country from West Texas.
OKLAHOMA CITY â€” Veteran 9-year-old Fifth Date was last of eight in the Oklahoma Classics Cup 13 nights ago, a race he won in 2012. Halloween worked out better for the Oklahoma-bred as he dropped down to the $10,000 claiming ranks, went to the front at the start and led every stride of his one-mile event.
Each year students take to the stage for the annual Miss Poteau High School pageant. This year's event proceeds will help the PHS Silver Steppers dance team travel to the National Dance Team Competition in March.
The pageant will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. Doors open to the public at 6 p.m.
Twenty-two contestants will answer onstage questions, participate in a casual wear and evening gown competition. The opening act for the night will be a choreographed dance performed by the contestants.
The Area 10 Special Olympics Bowling Competition took place Wednesday at Strike-A-Lot Lanes.
There were teams from Poteau, Arkoma, Cameron, Heavener, Howe, Muskogee and Stilwell with bowlers competing in singles and unified events. The unified competition was a doubles team consisting of a Special Olympian and a non-disabled partner.
There were 80 Special Olympians who competed in Wednesday's event as well as 28 unified teams.
All athletes had to compete in an area competition to be able to compete at the Oklahoma State Winter Games, which will take place in January in Norman.
The 2013-14 season will begin for the Howe Lady Lions and Lions tonight at Smithville. The girls game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys at approximately 8 p.m.
The Lady Lions were 19-9 last season and return two starters from that team â€” seniors LuAnn Davis (14 points, 2.1 rebounds per game last season) and Savannah Smallwood (2.8 points, 3.2 rebounds).
Rounding out the roster are Kerstein Hall, Tori Johnson, Jentry Brown, Kealy Brandin, Jaiden Griffith, Alice Stephens, Kelsee Williams, Macee Williams, Allison Beames and Shala Brown.
Hard to believe it's time for action on the hardwood.
High school basketball will begin for the five non-football county schools by Tuesday. Howe, Leflore and Wister begin tonight, while Cameron and Whitesboro will get started on Tuesday night.

I spent all day last Friday cleaning out the front of my shop for â€śJacquestoberfest 2013.â€ť We had a big Halloween party for Jacques and his friends. I made chili cheese dogs and Frito chili pies for all the kids to eat.
Melissa Urichson made a whole bunch of Halloweeen cupcakes as well as cookies and cream popcorn. I know â€” what? Cookies and cream popcorn? However, I have to say it was awesome.
The party kids played ping pong, air hockey and pool.
