Twelve jurors recommended death Wednesday evening for Donnie Lee Harris Jr. for the murder by fire of 24-year-old Kristi Ferguson.
Harris was convicted Tuesday of Ferguson's murder after a two-hour deliberation period and the death penalty phase of the trial began immediately. After a day and a half of testimony from Ferguson's and Harris' family in regard to the impact of the murder on them, the jury deliberated for a few hours before returning a recommendation of death for Harris.
The Blackhawk helicopter that crashed in Afghanistan killing six U.S. soldiers Tuesday was piloted by a LeFlore County native.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Randy L. Billings, 34, and five other soldiers died when their Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk crashed Tuesday in Now Bahar in southern Afghanistan while serving with NATO forces. The Pentagon said the crash remained under investigation.
Billings' Facebook page listed his hometown as Poteau and said he had attended high school in Heavener.
Billings was married and has family living in Heavener.
OKLAHOMA CITY â€” Poteau resident Danny Caldwell won his fourth consecutive title as leading owner at Remington Park and his fifth Ran Ricks, Jr. Memorial Award overall.
Caldwell runners are trained at Remington Park by Federico Villafranco, together they posted 29 wins to win the owner title by 15 victories. Poindexter Thoroughbreds of Springfield, Mo. and Black Hawk Stable of Elk City finished in a tie for second with 14 wins each.
Christmas vacation is here for me and I am ready for some time off from work. I am even more excited to be able to pull out my Mathews and get back in a tree stand. Dan Carter and I are joining Butch Parks at our lease in Clayton.
We are planning on staying for several days and enjoy the peace and quiet of late season bow hunting. Wister baseball coach John McAlester, Brad McMillin and Kolton Lynn are going to join us for a day or two during the hunt.
