I want to wish you a Merry Christmas to you all on this Christmas Eve. As you're reading this, I either am en route to have already arrived at my Christmas destination of Enid to spend Christmas with my mother, and will return Friday morning to be present to put out Saturday's sports pages — and cover the first day of the Panama Holiday Festival.
That leads me to mention that there will be some holiday hoops this week. The Panama Holiday Festival will be Saturday and Monday. The host Razorbacks and Lady ’Backs will be joined by Spiro, Haileyville and Acorn, Ark.
WILBURTON — Six LeFlore County basketball teams came away with some hardware Friday and Saturday at the 2013 Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic when it finally ended this past weekend after it had its final three days rescheduled from earlier this month due to this month's wintry and icy weather.
STILWELL — The Poteau Pirates lost their season opener Friday night, falling 56-45 to the homestanding Stilwell Indians.
The Pirates fell behind 18-12 after a period, and they never could get over the hump. Stilwell led 32-18 at halftime and took a 48-24 lead into the final period.
Spiro 82, Muldrow 49: Friday night in Spiro, Spiro didn't break away from Muldrow until the third quarter in this battle of the Bulldogs. Spiro, leading 36-32 at halftime, outscored Muldrow 30-7 in the third period to take a 66-39 lead into the final quarter.
STILWELL — The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered an 87-85 overtime loss to the Stilwell Lady Indians on Friday night in a very physically played game in which sophomore post player Allison Stone suffered a dislocated finger in the second period and will be out until the Jan. 4 home game against Atoka.
The Lady Pirates led 42-41 at halftime after trailing 18-16 at the end of the opening period, but were outscored 16-15 by the Lady Indians in the third quarter to knot the game at 57. Each team scored 22 points in the final period to tie the score at 79 to force overtime.
