January 6th
The deadline to sign up for the 2013 Upward Sports cheerleading and basketball leagues is Tuesday.
Cost is $55. For additional information, call Sharina Martindale at (918) 635-0554. Registrations can be dropped off at the Poteau Church of the Nazarene, located on the corner of Clayton and Walter.

Sunday Couple Scrambles at Wolf Ridge Golf Course will take place at 2 p.m. Sundays.
The entry fee is $15 per person for the nine-hole weekly event.
January 5th
ARKOMA — The 2013 portion of the basketball season got off on the right foot for the Arkoma Mustangs Thursday night as they picked up a home victory over the Wister Wildcats by the score of 46-37.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never trailed. They enjoyed a 12-6 lead after one period.
However, the Wildcats stayed close as Adrian Gonzales’ steal and lay-up with 26 seconds left before halftime cut Wister’s deficit to 20-13 at halftime. However, that was as close as the ’Cats got.
ARKOMA — A tough night shooting doomed the Wister Lady Wildcats as they suffered a 62-44 loss to the Arkoma Lady Mustangs on Thursday night at the Arkoma Gym.
The Lady ’Cats missed 19 shots in the first half, which led to them being down 19-7 after one period and being shutout 15-0 in the second quarter to trail the Lady Mustangs by 27 points, 34-7, at the break.
Wister did open the second half with a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to 38-16, but Arkoma’s lead was never seriously in jeopardy.
January 4th
MONROE — Although the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament does not begin officially until Monday, the two play-in games for the main draw took place Friday afternoon at the Monroe Public Schools gym.
The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets defeated the Shady Point Lady Warriors 35-24, while the Bokoshe Tigers were too much for Shady Point's boys in a 43-19 victory.
The Lady Yellowjackets will play top-seeded Howe at 7:15 p.m. Monday at the Howe gym, while the Tigers willo face No. 1-seeded Wister at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Wister gym.
LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale has announced his intentions to open two unsolved murder cases from 2009.
Jody Wilson, 23, of Wister, was found dead May 8, 2009 by a paraglider flying above the Runestone State Park. She was reported missing the following day by her husband Donald “Bo” Wilson.
The cause and manner of Wilson's death has not been determined due to decomposition.

The Poteau Spirit Center named its December Stars of the Month, and increased its amount of stars to include seven lucky individuals.
Piper Warren was chosen as one of the lucky Stars of the Month because she is a great listener, a sweet girl and has come a long way.
Adriana Crouch was named the Junior Cheer Team Star for the month of December, while Rayanna Ward was the Senior Cheer Team Star of the Month.
The Tumblebear Star of the Month for December went to Jenner Kirby.
Brooklyn Adams was awarded the Gymnastics Star of the Month.
