Poteau boys win district title, tie school record for wins in season

The Poteau Pirates baseball team took care of two things with one victory Friday afternoon at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates got their second mercy-rule win over the Roland Rangers to win the Class 4A District Tournament by a score of 14-6. In so doing, the Pirates (26-7) tied the school record for wins in a season as they won the Class 4A District Tournament, and will find out Monday what their regional fate will be.

Spiro boys sweep Heavener to win Class 3A district title

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team took the first step to returning to the Class 3A State Tournament.
The Bulldogs swept the Heavener Wolves by scores of 14-4 and 12-2 to win the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday.
The ’Dogs (23-6) will find out Monday who, when and where they will play in the regional tournament, which will be next week.
The season ended for the Wolves at 12-13.

Wister boys outlast Pocola to win Class 2A District Tournament

WISTER — It came down to the last inning of the final game of the Class 2A District Tournament before a champion was crowned.
Wister’s Cody Holzhammer hit a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning of Friday afternoon’s Game 3 to lead the Wildcats past the Pocola Indians 3-2.
The two county teams split the first two games of the district tournament on Thursday, with Pocola winning the opener 4-2 while Wister took the nightcap 5-2.
The ’Cats (20-7) will find out Monday where, who and when they will play next week in the Class 2A Regional Tournament.

Talihina boys take final two games from Panama to win Class 2A District Tournament

TALIHINA — After falling by a run in the Class 2A District Tournament opener on Thursday to the Panama Razorbacks and facing elimination twice, the Talihina Golden Tigers responded — in a big way.
After getting a 16-6 mercy-rule win over the Hogs in the second game on Thursday to force a winner-take-all game Friday afternoon, the Golden Tigers took the rubber game in another mercy-rule victory — this time 14-0. Panama took the opener 6-5.
The Golden Tigers (15-9) will find out Monday who, where and when they will play in next week’s Class 2A Regional Tournament.

Edward M. ‘Ed’ Knapp

Edward “Ed” M. Knapp, 59, of Cameron died Monday, April 15, 2013, in Cameron. Ed was born Oct. 12, 1953, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to Ethel and Elmer Knapp. Ed was a very dedicated father, husband, and carpenter. His entire life revolved around his family and carpentry work.

Mary Bruce, 88, of Poteau died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, in Poteau. 
Mary was born Jan. 26, 1925, at Talihina to Earl F. and Nannie Dee (Chewing) Tucker. She was a homemaker.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Finis Wyatt Bruce; a brother, Bud Tucker; a sister, Gerry Bruce; and a grandson, Russell Bruce.

Marie Cowan, 85, of Poteau died Friday, April 26, 2013, in Van Buren, Ark. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Judith Ann Steelman, 35, of Heavener died Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Heavener.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in Hontubby Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Choctaw Casino Hotel opens May 1

POCOLA — Choctaw Casino Hotel, one of nine casinos operated by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is opening the next phase of a multi-million dollar expansion that includes a hotel, event venue, additional gaming and a parking garage.

State Land Judging Contest

Approximately 1,000 teenagers and adults — members of FFA and 4-H Chapters from throughout the United States and their parents, coaches and teachers — will come to Oklahoma City next week, as they have the first week of May for more than six decades, to compete in a national educational competition. The National Land and Range Judging Contest, a three-day event that stresses soil and plant science, land management and conservation, marks its 62nd anniversary beginning on Tuesday, April 30.
