Area paramedic receives top honors at state ceremony

LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services and employees were honored during the annual Oklahoma Emergency Medical Technician Association banquet.
Anthony Stankewitz, 21, of Spiro, heard his name out called out during an awards ceremony last week in Tulsa as the 2012 Paramedic of the year. The award, which is peer based by nomination, recognized Stankewitz as the top outstanding Paramedic in Oklahoma.
His nomination was written by LCEMS Director, Dave Grovdahl.

Oaks Healthcare Center, providing happiness, love and quality of life

The Oaks Healthcare Center is proud to remain one of the biggest employers in Poteau. Some may recall the day when the Oaks was considered the old folk’s home where everyone goes when they are at the end of the road of life. Those days are long gone.
The Oaks is a hustling, bustling place full of love and life. The Oaks has a fully staffed rehabilitation department that has a long list of many patients they have got back on their feet again and home.

Tulsa Life Flight; A new era of emergency care

A new era in emergency medical care has begun in LeFlore County with the landing of Tulsa Life Flight at its new base at the Robert S. Kerr Airport in Poteau.
Tulsa Life Flight base four, owned by Air Methods Corp., began its local operations Jan. 12. By opening the Poteau location, Life Flight officials said they have greatly reduced their flight time, by approximately 30 minutes, compared with a run that was responding from the next nearest base in Keefeton.

“A Bike for Daylon” will happen May 18. Daylon is a 13-year-old with cerebral palsy who wants a bike to ride with his family.
Funds are being raised to help his parents purchase an adaptive bike for him.

Poteau boys end golf regular season by winning Pryor Invitational; Pirates, Heavener duo, Cameron golfer in regional tournaments Monday

PRYOR — The Poteau Pirates golf team will take a lot of momentum into Monday’s Class 4A Regional Tournament at Seminole’s Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
The Pirates won their regular-season finale as they captured the Pryor Invitational on Thursday with a score of 307-308—615. They were 20 shots ahead of runner-up Muldrow (635).
Three of Poteau’s golfers were top-10 medalists. Cody Shore was runner-up medalist with a 72-76—148. Connor Wheat was fourth-place medalist (77-74—151), while John Scott Sanders was seventh-place medalist (78-77—155).

Heavener girls trio wins titles at Beavers Bend Relays on Monday

BROKEN BOW — The Heavener High School track team had three athletes win events at Monday's Beavers Bend Relays at Memorial Stadium.
Jodie Hill won the 100-meter hurdles (15.71 seconds), John Enger the 1,600-meter run (6:28) and Kamber Vasquez the high jump (4-6).
In fact, it was a local 1-2-3 finish in the high jump. Vasquez's teammate, Melyssa Lynch, was second (4-4) and Howe's Alice Stephens was third (4-2).
It was a good day for both Heavener and Howe tracksters, as many placed.

Seminole State women take four games in one day from Carl Albert; Games 3, 4 were games slated for here Friday, but played Thursday to beat possible rainout

SHAWNEE — It will likely be a long time before the Carl Albert State College softball team again plays four games in one day, which was done Thursday with Seminole State so that Friday’s home doubleheader between the two teams would not get rained out.
The Lady Belles took all four games on Thursday, winning by scores of 10-2, 11-3, 15-0 and 8-6.
The regular season is now over for the Lady Vikings, who will not play again until the Region II Tournament on May 3-5 at Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium.

Brittney Cox Memorial Golf Tournament Rained Out

The second annual Brittney Cox Memorial Golf Tournament, which was slated for Saturday at Choctaw Country Club, was rained out.
It has not been rescheduled.

Wister girls see softball season end at regional tournament

TUSHKA — Two springs ago, the Lady Wildcats came within a win of making the Class 4A State Tournament at the regional tournament in Rattan.
Thursday night at the Class 4A Regional Tournament, the Lady ’Cats were in the same situation — one win from making state. Unfortunately for them, the same ill fate that happened in 2011 also happened Thursday night.
