Heavener golfing duo makes regional tournament

TAHLEQUAH — Two of the three Heavener Wolves golfers made it to the next stage of postseason play.
At Monday's Class 3A Regional Qualifier at Cherokee Trails Golf Course, Chance Dunigan and Colt Dunigan each qualified for Monday's regional tournament at Verdigris.
Chance Dunigan tied for fourth with a 97, while Colt Dunigan tied for sixth with a 99.
Jackson Long, Heavener's third golfer, missed out on the cut to make Monday's Class 3A Regional Tournament as he shot a 102.

Two Poteau boy golfers medal in Monday's Sallisaw Invitational; Pirates third as a team, play today in Pryor Invitational

SALLISAW — Two Poteau Pirate golfers were top-10 medalists in Monday's Sallisaw Invitational.
Cody Shore was runner-up medalist with a 75-70—145, while Connor Wheat was seventh at 78-75—153.
As a team, the Pirates were third in their first 36-hole tournament of the season, finishing with a 318-306—624. Host Sallisaw won its own tournament, while Fort Gibson was runner-up.
As for the rest of the Pirates, Jarrett Lowrimore shot an 83-79—162, followed by John Scott Sanders at 82-82—164 and Connor Bandy at 93-102—195.

Wine and Arts Festival this weekend

“An Evening at the Gallery” — Poteau Rotary Wine and Arts Festival — will take place from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Admission is $20 online at www.poteaurotary.org or $25 at the door. You must be 21 to attend.
Attendees will be able to taste wines from seven Oklahoma wineries, ample gourmet food selections and peruse gallery artwork.
Entertainment will feature performances by local artists on two different stages and Poteau's Good Times Theatre.

Whitesboro boys win Class B District Tournament on home field

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Bulldogs baseball team was facing elimination on its own field on Saturday in the Class B District Tournament, needing to beat the Buffalo Valley Buffaloes twice to win the championship — and advance to this week's regional tournament. That's just what they did.
The Bulldogs beat the Buffaloes 3-2 and 14-11 on Saturday to win the district title and advance to Thursday's Class B Regional Tournament in Tupelo where they will meet Moss at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs split their first two games on Friday, beating Battiest 10-4 but losing to Buffalo Valley 12-5.

Leflore boys beat McCurtain twice to win Class B District Tournament

McCURTAIN — The Leflore Savages baseball team did it the hard way, but did it they did. The Savages won a district title and advanced to this week's regional tournament.
Facing elimination all day Saturday in the Class B District Tournament, the Savages beat the host McCurtain Bulldogs twice by scores of 5-4 and 13-3 to win the title, and advance to a 11 a.m. Thursday game in Red Oak against the host Eagles in the regional tournament.
Leflore split its two games on Friday, beating Kinta 14-4 but losing 9-3 to McCurtain.

Carl Albert baseball team’s ninth-inning rally produces home win over Connors State

All that matters is leading when the game is over, just ask the Carl Albert State College baseball team.
Down 5-2 with only one more at-bat left in Monday afternoon’s nine-inning contest against the Connors State College Cowboys, the Vikings scored four runs in the ninth to snatch a 6-5 win from the jaws of defeat.
The Vikings will return to action at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a road doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, then play a twinbill at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Ival Goodman Field.

Poteau seniors want one more trip to slow-pitch state

As freshmen and sophomores, the current seniors on the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team made the Class 6A State Tournament, only to lose in the quarterfinals each time. As eighth-graders, the current seniors watched the Lady Pirates make slow-pitch state, which began the streak of three straight seasons of making slow-pitch state.
The Lady Pirates, who missed out on slow-pitch state last spring, want to get back there, and can do so by winning Wednesday’s Class 6A Regional Tournament in Muskogee.

Red Oak spoils Senior Night for Poteau Lady Pirates

The home career for six Poteau Lady Pirate senior softball players did not end the way they hoped.
The Red Oak Lady Eagles came to town and swept a pair of games Monday on Senior Night.
The Lady Eagles got a 10-0 mercy-rule victory in four innings in the opener, then took the nightcap 10-3.
Editor’s note: Tuesday’s road game at Muldrow was postponed and will not be made up.

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs lost a heart-breaking nine-inning game to the Poteau Pirates in the finals of the 32nd LeFlore County Tournament earlier this month. The ’Dogs avenged that loss Monday on Senior Night with a 9-4 win over the Pirates.
After the Pirates tied the game at 4 in the third inning, the Bulldogs scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth inning — all unearned runs — to take a 7-4 lead. The ’Dogs added two more runs in the fifth inning.
Heavener 4, Broken Bow 3: In Heavener, the Wolves celebrated Senior Night with a victory.

Relay for Life kickoff set for Monday

April 23, 2013

Relay for Life of LeFlore County will kick off this year’s program at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Poteau City Hall.
The annual cancer awareness and fundraising walk is planned for Sept. 7 at Costner Stadium.
Monday’s kickoff will include information tables and a chance to meet other participants.
A short video entitled “What is Relay” will be shown.
