Five local baseball players named to All-Region 6 Team, making them eligible for All-State status

Five lucky local high school baseball players received good news on Tuesday that they were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-Region 6 Baseball Team.
Poteau’s Jay Werner and Blake Johnson made the Large East Team, while Wister duo Tyler Gibson and Colby Turnipseed along with Talihina’s Trevor Crone made the Small East.
All five are in line to be selected to the 2013 All-State East teams, which will be made known at a later date.

Sports Briefs

The first annual Carl Albert State College/Poteau High School Softball Camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday at the Poteau High School softball field.
The camp was to have started Wednesday, but due to Monday and Tuesday rain showers, the field was unfit to have the camp begin today.
Cost is $40 per camper. If a family has more than one child, it will be $35 a child, and a group discount of $35 a child for teams that send at least five or more off a team.

Area businesses organize drop-off points for Moore donations

As the search continues for victims of the Moore, Okla. tornado on May 20, area businesses are reaching out to donors to help survivors.
If you would like to donate, there are several area drop-off points taking financial and material donations.

Crews race to find survivors of Oklahoma twister

MOORE, Okla. (AP) — Emergency crews searched the broken remnants of an Oklahoma City suburb Tuesday for survivors of a massive tornado that flattened homes and demolished an elementary school. At least 24 people were killed, including at least nine children, and those numbers were expected to climb.

The state medical examiner's office cut the estimated death toll by more than half but warned that the number was likely to climb again. Gov. Mary Fallin said authorities did not know how many people were still missing, but they vowed to account for every resident.

Storm damages Poteau and surrounding communities

Monday evening storms rolled through LeFlore County leaving a path of damage from a southwest section of Poteau ending in the Liberty Community east of Cameron.
According to Michael Davidson, director of LeFlore County Emergency Management, it is unclear if the damage was caused by straight line winds or from a twister. The National Weather Service yet has to arrive to survey damage and declare how the damage occurred, according to Davidson.

Chieko Pierce

Chieko Pierce, 57, of Cameron died Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Jan. 30, 1956, in Urasoe, Okinawa, Japan, to Shoei and Yae Okuma. She was a homemaker.

Joe Matthew Cooper

May 21, 2013

Joe Matthew Cooper, 61, of Poteau died Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.. Joe was born July 2, 1951, in San Bernadino, Calif., to Smokey and Juanita M. Cooper. Joe and Smokey Cooper had Cooper’s Furniture and Appliance. He was an avid fisherman. He loved his family and hosting family get-togethers. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Matthew Nelson Cooper; father- and mother-in-law, Bill and La-Dean Ritter.

Randy Thomas Branscum

Randy Thomas Branscum, 54, of Poteau died Sunday, May 19, 2013, in Poteau. Randy was born Oct. 17, 1958, in Loma Linda, Calif., to James Ray and Evelyn Eve (Graham) Branscum. He was the lead operator at Animal Feed Supplement. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Michael Branscum.

Opheline Myers

Opheline Myers, 88, of Shady Point died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Monroe and Jessie (Keeling) Abbott of Ada. Opheline was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Egypt, Okla. Opheline was united in marriage to Curtis Myers on Nov. 11, 1944, at their preacher’s home in Ada. Curtis and Opheline moved to Poteau in 1972, where they opened the Sonic Drive In. Opheline was a homemaker and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed.
