Poteau Pirates have interteam scrimmage on Saturday night

The Poteau Pirates had their red-white interteam scrimmage Saturday night at Costner Stadium as they split their 63 players as equally as possible.
The Pirates started practice last week, put on pads Friday for the first time, and then staged a full-contact scrimmage on Saturday night, a scrimmage that was going to be used as a starting point for evaluating players.

Poteau girls go 2-3 at Broken Arrow Tournament

BROKEN ARROW — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team went 2-3 to open the season this past weekend at the Broken Arrow Tournament.
Poteau beat Sapulpa 9-6 and Oologah 2-1, but lost 7-5 to Broken Arrow, 7-6 to Oklahoma City Putnam City North and 9-0 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah.

Pocola girls win own tournament with two wins over Wister; Lady Indian senior catcher wins tournament's Most Valuable Player Award

POCOLA — The Pocola Lady Indians softball team won its own tournament, but had to do it the hard way Saturday night.
The Lady Indians, who lost the winner's-bracket final 5-0 to the Wister Lady Wildcats earlier in the day, beat the Lady ’Cats twice by scores of 6-1 and 5-2 to win the inaugural Pocola Invitational.
The Lady Indians rebounded from the loss to Wister by outlasting the Stigler Lady Panthers 2-1 in a nine-inning game which went to the international tie-breaker to get to the championship round.
Stigler eliminated Cameron 6-0 to get the day started on Saturday.

"Titanic" sinks at cardboard boat race

Dave Grovdahl, director of LeFlore County EMS, survived the sinking of the "Titanic", a cardboard boat built to race during the weekend at Wister Lake. The event was hosted by the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department the the LeFlore County Dive Team.

Road detour and bridge adoption on Commissioners agenda

Residents along Saw Mill Road near Wister soon may have an alternative route for traveling to and from their homes.
During Monday's county commissioner meeting, Farrell Cooper Mining representative Tom Gilbert spoke to the commissioners about plans to create a temporary detour during an upcoming mining operation.

James “Jim” Hancock

James “Jim” Hancock, 88, of Woodward died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, in the Clinton Veterans Center.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Ed Laird officiating. A private family burial was planned.

Joseph Haberland

Joseph Haberland, 73, of McCurtain died Aug. 18, 2013, in Poteau. Joseph was born May 29, 1940, in Newark, N.J. to Stanley and Gertrude (Dudkiewicz) Haberland. Joseph, or “Hammer Down,” was a heavy equipment operator and a rancher. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents. Joe was known as a hard worker and a joker by many but most important to him was family. There was not always much time between work and ranching but he always found a way to show his children he thought about them all the time.

Leslie Adkins

Leslie Adkins, 58, of Poteau died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, in Poteau. Leslie was born Feb. 6, 1955 in Talihina. He was a painter. Leslie was preceded in death by his wife, Lavina Corrine Adkins. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his son, Leslie Adkins Jr. of Poteau; daughter, Evelyn Marie Adkins of Poteau, Rose Marie Adkins of Poteau, Trudy Walkup of Cameron; brothers, Leonard and Harold; sisters, Alice, Bertha, Leona, Beulah and Cathy; numerous grandchildren; other relatives and loved ones; many beloved friends.

Anna Mae Phillips, 91, of Howe died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, in Pocola.
Services are planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at United Methodist Church in Howe. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Poteau, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home, Heavener. An online guest book is available at dowdenfh.com.
