Thursday's High School Baseball Roundup

WISTER — A big inning late in the game helped the Wister Wildcats down the Preston Pirates 8-3 for a Thursday afternoon victory.
After the Pirates tied the game at 3 in the top of the sixth inning, Adrian Gonzales hit a two-run home run to highlight a five-run inning for the Wildcats to get them the win.
Howe 12, McCurtain 0: In McCurtain, the Lions got their second win of the season as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. An eight-run third inning ended the game by run rule.
Crowder 4, Cameron 1; Okay 10, Cameron 2: In Cameron, the Yellowjackets had a rough day on Thursday.

Heavener boys ninth, Lady Wolves 11th at Early Tiger Invitational

TAHLEQUAH — The Heavener Wolves cross country team was ninth and the Lady Wolves 11th at the Early Bird Invitational on Thursday.
The Wolves had 218 points, finishing behind champion and host Tahlequah (30 points). Sequoyah-Tahlequah was second (74 points), followed by Kansas (101), Life Way Christian (134), Pryor (142), Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside (149), Jay (154) and Sallisaw (168).

Registration is open for the 2013 LeFlore County Express Fall Soccer League.
Registration can be done through the Internet at www.leflorecountysoccer.com.
Late registration cost per child is $40.

There will be age 8-, 10- and 12-and-younger softball leagues at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex this fall.
The entry fee is $250 for 8- and 10-and-younger teams, while the entry fee is $300 for the 12-and-younger teams.

MENA, Ark. — In last week's Poteau Pirates' football scrimmage against the Heavener Wolves at Costner Stadium, the Pirates seemed bland and had a case of the blahs. Apparently, that got corrected this past week in practice.

Spiro shows improvement in Stilwell scrimmage

SPIRO — The good news was that Spiro football coach Chris Bunch saw some improvement in his team from last week's home scrimmage with Okmulgee to Thursday night's scrimmage at McClain Stadium against the Stilwell Indians.
“I saw some improvement in certain spots,” Spiro coach Chris Bunch said. “We still have some kids who are banged up and didn't get to play as much as I was wanting them to. Hopefully, we'll get those guys back by next week, but I did see some improvement.”

MULDROW — The Poteau Lady Pirates made this week a perfect one as they picked up a pair of wins in Thursday's three-way, beating host Muldrow 6-1 and blanking Stilwell 9-0.
Pocola 6, Heavener 5: In Heavener, the Lady Indians broke a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth inning and a single run in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Wolves had a four-run inning of their own in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-4 after five innings, but they got no closer as Pocola scored a big insurance run in the sixth to make it 6-4.

OHP warns of Labor Day crackdown on drivers

OKLAHOMA CITY — Public Safety officials will be participating in a
nationwide campaign this Labor Day weekend in an effort to reduce highway
traffic deaths and injury collisions on Oklahoma highways. "Operation
C.A.R.E." (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) began at 6 p.m. Friday
and runs through midnight Monday.

Spiro lace named endangered artifact

A fragment of lace from Spiro Mounds has been placed on the list of Oklahoma's 10 most endangered artifacts.
The list of endangered items was created by a committee of the Oklahoma Cultural Heritage Trust. The Spiro lace is on of two items on the list placed in the acre of the Sam Noble Museum of natural History at the University of Oklahoma.
The other item is a collection of 1920s era organ player rolls.

Emergency Expo hosts 5K and free screenings

August 30, 2013

During the upcoming emergency preparedness expo to be held Sept. 21, runners will get a chance to take part in the first 5K run/walk held by organizers.
Participants of all ages are welcome to enter the "Race to Prepare" run that will begin at Carl Albert State College in Poteau. There will be special divisions for military personnel and first responders. Disabled American Veterans will be allowed free entry to participate in the event.
Early registration cost $20 per participant and ends on Sept 13. Registration is $25 the day of the race.
