Clifton Edward â€śJoeâ€ť Barnes, 84, of Heavener died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.

The Talihina Chamber of Commerce hosted the sixth annual Back-to-School Bash Family Fun Time on Friday.
"The fun started a little late because just about time for it to start the rain came down," said Chamber Manager Vera Nelson.
Even though it started off a little damp the kids had a great timeÂ bouncing on the inflatables, swimming in the swimming pool, receiving school supply goody bags and food and cold Drinks.
Donations from businesses helped keep the cost down making this event possible for the children to enjoy, Nelson said.
After more than two years, the LeFlore County Museum located at the Hotel Lowrey on Dewey Avenue in Poteau has opened its doors to the public.
After many months or preparing the exhibits in room on the second and third floors, as well as the revolving exhibit located downstairs in the recently dedicated Arlene LeMaster Gallery Room, museum officials announced their official business hours.
History lovers will be able to visit the museum Tuesday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Beginning Oct. 1, Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center will be one of 2,225 hospitals nationwide to be penalized by the Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services as part of the Affordable Care Act program targeting hospital readmission rates, according to CMS.
â€śThirty-day readmissions have been a problem identified by CMS for a hospital performance improvement,â€ť said EOMC CEO Mike Carter. â€śIt was estimated that one in five Medicare beneficiaries were readmitted within 30 days of the initial admission and discharge.â€ť

Alfie L. Cooper, 81, of Spiro died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.
Services will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Forest park Cemetery, Fort Smith, Ark.

Mary Lou House, 69, of Heavener died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Heavener. Mary was born July 24, 1944, in Big Cedar to James Lewis and Allie Elizabeth (Roberts) Branscum. She was a dietary specialist at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jeffery Stewart; five sisters and two brothers.
Leon Barnes, 79, of Cameron died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was born, Oct. 21, 1933, in Pocola to Cooper Minor and Ruby Kathryn (Martin) Barnes. He was a rancher and a member of the First Baptist Church of Pocola.
Leon is preceded in death by his parents; wife Linda (Cunningham) Barnes; daughter Vanessa Barnes; sister Linda Kathryn; two brothers, Travis Gene and Bobby Ray.
Betty L. Shockley, 77, of Poteau died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, in Poteau.
Betty was born Jan. 2, 1936, in Clint, Texas, to Jesse B. and Bernice (Frey) Nichols. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her Facebook friends and researching family genealogy. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin E. Shockley; her parents; and sister, Evelyn Nichols.
While summer will not end until next month, for all intents and purposes it really has â€” at least for me.

So, officially my summer ended on Monday when I went up to cover the opening day of the Pocola Invitational â€” as well as photograph two high school football teams' opening day of practice.
