Poteau man hospitalized after deer attack

August 27, 2013

A Poteau man was seriously injured Tuesday morning after he was attacked by a deer during his daily walk.
According to LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale, 75-year-old Larry Lontz was walking on Monks Drive in the ABM addition north of Poteau at about 6:30 a.m. when the attack occurred.
Seale said an 8-point buck with an orange collar charged Lontz, goring him in the neck, abdomen and arm. A passerby stopped to help Lontz who was still being attacked by the deer. Seale said the person was able to scare the deer away and call for help.

One special section down, one to go

August 27, 2013

I made it through the first of two enormously busy weeks for me as the 2013 Fall Diamond Tab was in Saturday's edition, and I hope you all enjoyed it.
However, that's just one of two back-to-back special sections I have to work on. I'll spend this week preparing the 2013 LeFlore County Gridiron Preview for this Saturday's paper. Thus, just like last week, you all may not see me a whole lot around the diamond as normal.
Once this week and the Labor Day weekend pass, I should be able to be my “normal” self and be at a game a day somewhere at the diamond.

Pirates, Wolves square off in preseason test

August 26, 2013

It has been a while since it happened, but Heavener and Poteau met Friday night on the turf at Costner Stadium. This rivalry used to be a staple in LeFlore County, and was just about as even its all-time record will testify. Poteau held a two-win margin over Heavener. The Wolves held the early series edge, but the Pirates ran off 10 wins as the series wained.
The format of the scrimmage was each teams would run a dozen plays. On defense, blitzes were not allowed.

Pocola offense hits for big plays against Gore in scrimmage

August 26, 2013

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians had their first football scrimmage of the young 2013 season Friday night at John Carter Field, hosting the Gore Pirates.
The junior varsity started the scrimmage with each team running 10 plays each, alternating offense and defense three times. Later, the varsity added some down-and-distance situations which led to some big plays for the Indians.
The Indian defense held the Pirates to 17 yards in the first seven plays of varsity. Senior linebacker Garrett Howard recorded a sack on the next play for a 2-yard loss.

Arkoma defense strong, offense shaky in Friday night's scrimmage against Porum

August 26, 2013

ARKOMA — Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton figured his Mustangs' defensive unit would have a good game, and it did in Friday night's scrimmage against Porum at Mustang Field. However, the offensive unit did not perform as well as he thought it would.
The Panthers scored only once on the Mustangs.
“Defensively, I thought we were pretty good,” Weatherton said. “We were a little inconsistent at linebacker. Our defense really had a better game than our offense did.”

Panama looks good in home scrimmage with Savanna

August 26, 2013

PANAMA — For the most part, the Panama Razorbacks' outing in their first football scrimmage of the 2013 preseason, a home one Friday night at George Ollie Stadium against Savanna, was pleasing to third-year coach Brandon Ellis.
“I thought we got out of it what we wanted to,” he said. “We stayed healthy.”
The Hogs scored three times, all on long scoring runs by three different people. Ryan Shirey took it to the house from 60 yards out, while Donald Lotchleas and Andy Burris each had TD scampers of 70 yards.
