The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team used big innings to down the opposition in Monday's home three-way with the Spiro Lady Bulldogs (16-0) and the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds (11-1).
The Lady Bulldogs lost the middle game 13-2 to the Lady Black Diamonds.
ARKOMA â€” A three-run seventh inning broke a 1-all tie to lead the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets to a 4-1 win over the Arkoma Mustangs on Monday afternoon.
Each team scored once in the third inning.
Heavener 9, Howe 1: In Howe, the Lady Wolves scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead for good.
Pocola 6, Muldrow 4: In Pocola, the Lady Indians used home runs by Taylor Farley and Sarah Eddins to down the Lady Bulldogs.
With the game tied at 3, Pocola scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
The seeding pretty much held true Monday night as the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament got under way at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Spiro, Heavener and Wister â€” the three teams that got opening-round byes â€” all won, as did Poteau/Pansy Kidd Middle School.
The Lady Bulldogs downed Cameron, while Heavener beat Panama and Wister knocked off Talihina.
Pansy Kidd Middle School's team had to get two wins to make it to the semifinals, defeating Arkoma and Pocola.
Cameron voters are deciding today on a proposed 2 percent sales tax to help fund city governmental operations.
This will be the second time voters hit the polls to cast their ballot in favor or against the tax, having previously been defeated in November 2012. The earlier vote was close, the tax failing by 2 votes, creating a 2.6 percent margin.
Cameron voters are casting their ballots for the special municipal election at the Cameron School from until 7 p.m.
Put on your tennis shoes and grab your water bottle, there is a new walk in town.
The Poteau Chamber of Commerce and Fenton Motors of Poteau have announced the 2013 Walk, Run or Dye 5k to be held Saturday, starting at the Poteau City Hall parking lot.
The event welcomes participants of all ages and will not be a timed event. There will be no metals or trophies awarded, just a chance to hang out with family and friends during a healthy event.
Drucilla Joyce Fritts, 75, of Spiro died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013.
Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Cowlington Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Mitchell Lee Warren Sr., 83, of Heavener died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, in Heavener.
No service is planned at this time. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Heavener, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.
Willie Jean Hunt, 84, of Poteau died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, in Poteau. Willie was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Panama to Willie E. and Edna (Reeves) Goff. She was a secretary for Casa Bonita. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Russel Hunt.
It's almost here, LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament Week. The annual event will begin Monday at Panama, due to the Poteau Area Recreational Complex not being available.
The bracket of this year's tournament will be in Saturday's edition.
HENRYETTA â€” The Heavener High School cross country teams ran in their second meet of the season Saturday at the Henryetta Invitational.
The Wolves were 13th with 295 points. The host Golden Knights won the team title with 101 points.
Octavio Sanchez was Heavener's highest placer, running the 5k run in 22:11 to place 62nd. Frank Cruz was 94th (23:53), Estaban Martinez was 96th (24:08), James Cinocca was 129th (26:36), Jacob Robertson was 138th (27:18) and Devon Matthews was 153rd (29:30).
